Autograph

Born in Graz , Styria. He studied theater and romance languages in Graz and Vienna. He was a representative of the literary avant-garde, was heavily influenced by the theater of the absurd and existential drama. He began to write plays in 1961, his first one-act plays were staged in 1962. Got international fame after staging his play Magic Afternoon in 1967. Many other surrealist plays, notably Change (1963) and Gespenster (1973), have gained not less success. Almost all of his works were immediately translated into English and since the late 1970s have enjoyed much greater fame and popularity in English-speaking countries than in Germany and Austria.

In Austria, headlines for newspapers more often included details of Bauer's private life than his plays, as he was notorious as a drunkard, rowdy and heavy smoker. In 1992 - 2001, he taught at the Vienna School of Poetry, in the early 1990s, for financial reasons, began to write journalistic articles. He died in 2005 from heart disease. Despite the ambiguous attitude to his work during his lifetime, full-fledged scientific research is being written about him and his plays.
