Biography

Frederick Charles Bartlett was born on October 20, 1886 in Stow on Wold.

He studied social sciences at St. John's College in Cambridge, after completing his studies, he began working in the Cambridge Psychology Laboratory, which he headed from 1931 to 1951. In 1944, he was one of the founders of the Applied Psychology Research Group, leading it in 1945 [3] . He was elected a member of the Royal Society in 1932, in 1948 he was knighted.

In 1952, for a significant contribution to science, the scientist was awarded the Royal Medal of the Royal Society of London [4] .

In 1958 he was elected a foreign honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences [5] .

Frederick Charles Bartlett died September 30, 1969 in Cambridge.

Bartlett's works in the field of studying memory processes are most known: he read out short stories with a somewhat illogical sequence of actions to subjects, and then, after a considerable time, he asked them to recall these stories as accurately as possible; he found that it was extremely difficult for most people to remember such stories even after repeated reading, and put forward the so-called theory of memorization schemes, according to which those elements of the narrative that could not fit into the memorization scheme of the listener were subsequently excluded from his memories or transformed [6] .

The British Ergonomic Society awards the Bartlett Medal in his honor, and the Society for Experimental Psychology holds Bartlett Lectures annually.
