Elizbar Ananiashvili was born in Georgia in 1912, a physicist by training. Known as a translator of poetry, prose and drama from French, German, English, Italian, as well as the languages ​​of the peoples of the USSR. Translations of Ananiashvili are published in several poetic anthologies, including in the BVL series. Elizbar Ananiashvili - winner of the Machabeli literary prize, member of the board and vice president of the literary commission of the International Federation of Translators at UNESCO, Honored Worker of Culture of the RSFSR, laureate of the Komsomol Prize.

Among his many works are translations of American poets Karl Sandberg and Edgar Lee Masters , French and Italian poets, including J. Odiberti, I. Broussard and others, novels and novels from Georgian in a wide range, ranging from classics of Georgian literature Javakhishvili and Georgy Leonidze and ending with modern author Otar Chiladze . In the book "Fundamentals of the General Theory of Translation" by the prominent theoretician of translation A. V. Fedorov, the name of Elizbar Ananiashvili is mentioned among the names that made up an entire era in Russian culture - Chukovsky, Pasternak, Marshak.

Needless to say, what benefits does an interpreter — both a poet and a prose writer — have in command of the original language and knowledge of the culture of the people when it is combined with translation talent and professional skills, as, for example, in the work of S. Ivanov, V. Ganiev, E. Ananiashvili and a number of poets-translators from Turkic languages, Ukrainian, Belarusian.

Maurice Friedberg, an American literary critic and professor of literature, in his book “Literary Translation in Russia”, devoted to the history of translation in Russia, the difficulties that a translator faces, different views on an ideal translation, also speaks complimentarily about the work of Elizbar Ananiashvili [2] . His translations from Georgian were appreciated by Boris Pasternak , and another famous translator of American poetry, Mikhail Zenkevich , spoke highly of the translations of Elizbar Ananiashvili from Karl Sandberg.

Elizbar Ananiashvili began to engage in literary activities in the early 30s. In the mid-40s began to be published. Part of his poetic translations at that time was published under the pseudonym Dmitry Streltsov. Already before the war, his translations of Carl Sandberg and Edgar Lee Masters' verbs were widely known in the literary circles of Moscow. The poet and translator Arkady Shteinberg admitted that he carried Karl Sandberg’s poems in the translations of his friend Elizbar Ananashvili through his war bag throughout his war years. Since 1944, Elizbar Ananiashvili - a member of the Union of Writers of the USSR [3] .

The first publication of the novel in the translation of Elizbar Ananiashvili Gamsakhurdia KS “David the Builder” took place in 1945, the last publication - translations of Karl Sandberg - in 2001.

In the years 1946-1947, the poetic dramas of Sandro Shankhishvili were published , for which in 1949 the author became the laureate of the Stalin Prize of the second degree. In 1978, in a translation of Elizbar Ananiashvili, Otar Chiladze’s novel “A man walked along the road” was published, and in 1984, in his own translation, the Otar Chiladze novel “Iron Theater”, awarded in 1983 by the State Shota Rustaveli Georgian SSR Prize, was published.

In 1995, the Moscow publishing house “Linor” published in the series “Visiting Card” a book of poems by Elizbar Ananiashvili “Long and Recently.” Elizbar Georgievich knew Boris Pasternak well and was friends with Tsvetaeva; this was to him and his friends Marina Ivanovna Tsvetaeva read The Tale of Sonechka on the night before the Great Patriotic War [4] . In the diary entries of the son of M. I. Tsvetaeva, George Efron, his impressions of his meetings with Elizbar Ananiashvili are described [5] .

For 25 years, Elizbar Georgievich was one of the leaders of the Artistic Translation Council of the Writers' Union. Among his students in the field of literature, poetry and translation are Jan Probstein , Anatoly Kudryavitsky , Lyudmila Vagurina , Sergey Zenkevich , Tatyana Stamova (Gutina), Dmitry Vedenyapin , Marina Boroditskaya , Evgenia Slavorossova , Roman Dubrovkin , Natalya Vanhanenen and others.

Family

His wife, Vera Kireeva (1914-1979), was professionally engaged in translations, mainly in Georgian prose and poetry, a member of the Union of Writers of the USSR [6] . She wrote poetry from her youth. They were known in a narrow literary circle, but were first published only after her death in f. "Literary Georgia." In 1995, the publishing house "Linor" released a collection of her poems, "And the swallow flies in the gallery."
