Karl Marx Street (Irkutsk)

Karla Marksa Street (formerly Bolshaya, Bolshaya Pershpektivnaya [1] ) is a street in the Right Bank District of the city ​​of Irkutsk , one of the two main streets and one of the oldest streets in the city.

Street geography

Its length is 2350 m. It is located in the historical center between the Gorky and Dzerzhinsky streets parallel to it. It goes from south-west to north-east from Gagarin Boulevard to the intersection with Oktyabrskaya Revolution Street .

Street history

In 1726, at the direction of Savva Raguzinsky Posad in Irkutsk, he was surrounded by a rampart with a palisade and a moat, which stretched from the Angara River channel to the Ushakovka River. By 1760, the palisade was dilapidated, the moat partially crumbled. By the decision of the magistrate, the remains of the fortifications were destroyed, in their place was laid a new street, which received the name - Bolshaya Perspektivnaya, in popular speech - Bolshaya.

In 2009, street houses with its historical name appeared on Karl Marx Street [2] .

On April 23, 2013, the scientific and practical conference “Bolshaya Street in Persons and Events” was held, dedicated to the history of the street [3] [4] . The second conference is scheduled for April 2014 [5] .

November 24, 2013 on Karl Marx Street passed the Olympic torch relay [6] .

In 2013, a presentation of the Karl Marx Street gardening project took place [7] .

In 2018, about 150 large-sized seedlings were planted on Karl Marx Street as part of the “My Green City” action: white poplar , ash, Maak cherries , large-leaved elm, linden and spruce [8] .

The main building of the museum

It was erected in 1882-1891 in the Moorish style by the project of architect G.V. Rosen [9] to replace the building that died in the fire of 1879 along with the museum collection (the building was located on Tikhvin Square ).

The complex includes the main building, the conservator building of the museum and the fence with a gate [9] . On the frieze of the main building, in 1883, the names of researchers from Siberia, the Far East and the Arctic, members of the Russian Geographical Society: Bering , Wrangel , Georgi , Gmelin , Krasheninnikov , Maak , Messershmidt , Miller , Pelles , Steller were immortalized . In 1892, the names of Humboldt , Ledebour , Maksimovic , Middendorf , Nordenskiold , Przhevalsky , Turchaninov , Chersky were added. In 2007, the name Kolchak was added [10] .

The museum collection was replenished with both ethnographic expeditions in the Asian part of Russia and foreign ones. In 1920, the museum of Arsenal was nationalized and became the property of the state. During the Soviet period, M. M. Gerasimov , A. P. Okladnikov, and others worked in the museum [11] . During operation, the building has not undergone significant restructuring and redevelopment. Currently, it houses the history department of the Irkutsk Regional Museum of Local Lore .

Rassushin House

Built in 1902 by city architect V. A. Rassushin according to his own design. It is a two-story wooden building with an architect’s brick workshop attached to it in 1906. On the main facade there are two vestibules with main entrances and a balcony with forged metal fencing. On the roof of the main building there are octagonal domes with figured spiers and weather vanes . The Rassushins family lived in this mansion until 1920. Since 1963, the building houses the pharmaceutical faculty of the Irkutsk State Medical University [12] .

Theater named after N. P. Okhlopkova

Irkutsk Academic Drama Theater named after N. P. Okhlopkov . The building was built in 1894-1897 by the project of the St. Petersburg architect V. A. Schroeter on the site of a burnt wooden theater [13] . Construction was carried out on donations of citizens. The front volume of the building with a vestibule is decorated with a four-column portico and is completed with a trough-shaped dome. The auditorium has a four-tier structure, has a rich decoration, is surrounded by a corridor with a ring of various foyer and stairs. The multicolor coloring of the building gives it a sense of festivity [14] .

The names of K.A. Zubov , L.I. Gaidai , A.V. Vampilov , V.K. Wenger and others are associated with the Irkutsk Theater. On November 2, 1967, by decree of the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR, the theater was named after the prominent Soviet director N. P. Okhlopkov , whose theatrical activities began on the Irkutsk stage [15] . In 1997-1999, a large-scale reconstruction of the theater was carried out, and a new chamber stage was opened. In 1999, the theater was awarded the title of academic.
