Biography

He came from a wealthy merchant family. Grandfather is a merchant of the first guild Mikhail Emelyanovich Korovin .

After the bankruptcy of his father in adolescence, he moved to Mytishchi , where he first met with painting [6] .

At the age of fourteen, Konstantin entered the architectural department of the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture , a year later he moved to the department of painting. He studied under Alexei Savrasov and Vasily Polenov .

To complete his education, Korovin went to St. Petersburg and entered the Academy of Arts , but after three months he left there, disappointed in the teaching methods.

In 1894, Korovin, along with a friend, artist Valentin Serov , made a trip to the North. The trip resulted in landscapes β€œHarbor in Norway”, β€œStream of St. Tryphon in Pechenga”, β€œ Gemmerfest. Northern Lights "," Murmansk Coast ".

He traveled to Paris in 1887, 1892 and 1893, where he became acquainted with impressionism .

In 1896, Konstantin Korovin designed the Far North pavilion, built according to his project at the fair in Nizhny Novgorod .

Costume design for Prince Igor for staging the opera β€œ Prince Igor " at the Mariinsky Theater . 1909

In the 1900s, the artist actively worked in the theater, creating sketches of costumes and scenery for dramatic productions, as well as operas and ballets. In particular, he designed the performances Faust (1899), The Little Humpbacked Horse (1901), Sadko (1906), and The Golden Cockerel (1909). Konstantin Korovin worked on the design of the performances of the Bolshoi Theater , Mariinsky Theater and La Scala Theater in Milan [5] .

A significant place in the work of Korovin was occupied by Paris . City landscapes were created under the strong influence of the French impressionists . He masterfully managed to convey the life of the French capital during the hours of morning awakening, but most of all in the evening, in the radiance of lights on the streets and boulevards (Paris. Capuchinok Boulevard, 1902, 1906 and 1911; Paris in the Morning, 1906. Everything is Tretyakov Gallery).

In Paris, Korovin was carried away by symbolism and, returning to Russia, attended lectures by esthete artist Modest Durnov , talked with the poet Konstantin Balmont . During these years he painted the paintings β€œNorthern Idyll” (1892, Tretyakov Gallery) and β€œMuse” (1890s, Tretyakov Gallery).

During the First World War, Konstantin Korovin worked as a disguise consultant at the headquarters of the Russian army.

For decades, Korovin participated in exhibitions of artists of different directions and associations - Wanderers , " World of Art ", "Union of 36", the Union of Russian Artists .

Since 1901, Konstantin Korovin and Valentin Serov taught at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture . Among his students were the stage designer Sergei Nikolaev , the future teacher, writer and local historian Sergey Volkov .

In 1902, Korovin acquired a plot of land from Savva Mamontov and built a house in the village of Okhotino. Now it is the Pereslavl region of the Yaroslavl region . A little later, a part of the land, the so-called Ratukha wasteland, was bought from him by Fedor Chaliapin , and he also built a house for himself according to Korovin’s project [7] .

In the memoirs of one of his students, Nikolai Chernyshev , there are several episodes that give an idea of the artist's worldview. Very characteristic are the words spoken by Korovin Chernyshev in 1903 during his illness [8] :

Still lying in bed, Konstantin Alekseevich took my sketch, put it on his stomach and began to speak.
β€œFirst of all, literary painting should be avoided,” were his first words. However, he found in him (a sketch) a lot of warmth, poetry, β€œHow much love!” - he exclaimed.
I was worried that I was tired of the patient, and he talked about his youth, how difficult it was for them ... It happened that they were starving, but working hard.
β€œMoney - g ...,” he repeatedly turned a strong word. - Never think about money. They will come to you ... Write more here, what is here, on the street, before your eyes, ”he said, pointing to the window and looking around the room. - Live in your room, surrounded by paints, watercolors, pastels. ... Write to everyone, try yourself in everything. Eat more, be healthy, cheerful, but all for art . It is better to live in a hole and, suffering all sorts of hardships, enjoy your art ...
Know Faith, Hope and Love, and in all hardships, remember these three.
If he forgot one of them, he died. ”

Gurzuf, 1914

Crimea occupies a significant place in Korovin’s work, where in Gurzuf the artist built a summer house according to his design. The two-story villa was built on the site of the former tavern and with its clear geometric shapes testified to the onset of the era of constructivism in architecture. During 1910-1917, the artist lived for a long time at the Gurzuf cottage. Especially after the accident with his son, when Korovin left for a long time in Gurzuf (in 1913 the artist’s son fell under a tram and lost his legs). Here the artist worked a lot and fruitfully. In works flooded with sunlight, he often portrayed a fairly large space, as if trying to establish the life-giving power of the rays that carry heat with them - this is the source of grace and beauty.

Korovin gave the name to his summer residence somewhat unusual for the Crimea - β€œSalambo”, in memory of the successfully completed work on the scenery for A.F. Arends’s ballet β€œSalambo” based on G. Flaubert’s novel of the same name. At the Salammbo cottage there were I.E. Repin, R.I. Surikov, A.M. Gorky, A.I. Kuprin, D.N. Mamin-Sibiryak, F.I.Shalyapin. The owner of the summer residence "Salambo" painted roses in his paintings, which were visible from the windows against the sea. Today, any holidaymaker who comes to Gurzuf in May will surely pay attention to the magnificent yellow roses that encircle the arch of the entrance to the House of Creativity of the Art Fund, as the former dacha is now called. Another same rose is in the courtyard, inside.

After the 1917 revolution, Korovin did not come to Gurzuf anymore. In Soviet times, the cottage was used as a recreation center. Since 1947, she became the House of Creativity of the Art Fund. Today - K.A. House of Artists Korovin consists of two buildings. One of these buildings is the former summer house of the artist Korovin.

After the October Revolution in Russia, Korovin was actively involved in preserving art monuments, organized auctions and exhibitions in favor of the freed political prisoners, and continued to work with theaters. Since 1918, the artist lived on the estate of Ostrovno Vyshnevolotsky Uyezd in the Tver province, taught in the free state-owned art workshops at the Chaika cottage.

In 1922, the artist, on the advice of Anatoly Lunacharsky, went abroad and settled in France.

Along with the gift of the painter, Konstantin Alekseevich possessed an extraordinary literary talent. When the loss of vision forced to completely abandon the visual arts, the artist continued to write short stories.

Korovin died in Paris on September 11, 1939 .

A large number of the artist's works are stored in the Russian Museum .
