The genus was first described by the American botanist Frederick Lewis Lewton ( Spanish: Frederick Lewis Lewton 1874-1959 ) in Smithsonian Miscellaneous Collections with a typical species Kokia rockii . Previously known representatives of this genus were attributed to cotton .
About 4 species are known, all are endemic to the Hawaiian Islands .
One species - Cocia Cooka does not occur in the wild, is preserved in the culture from the seeds of the last instance of the plant, originating from the island of Molokai .
