Tie Men was owned by Lipton Tea Company, which gave them their unusual name in honor of the Boston Tea Party painting. They won their division in 1978 and participated in the playoffs in 1980. However, the team struggled with financial problems in Massachusetts. After the 1980 season, they moved to Jacksonville , Florida , and became known as the Jacksonville Ti Men . [1]
History
Led by debut season former Charlton Athletic striker Mike Flanegan , Tie Men won their division and gained public acclaim, and Flanegan was awarded the MVP League. The following seasons were not so successful for two important reasons: Flanegan had a valid contract with Charlton and remained in England (an attempt to secure the continuation of the contract failed); the team temporarily relocated from Foxbord Stadium when the owners of the nearby State Equestrian Race Track began to claim that the T-Men matches were causing running problems. After spending one season at Nickerson Field, the team reached an agreement with the racetrack leadership regarding returning to Foxbord Stadium on condition that there were no matches on race days, so Ti Men had to play a lot on Mondays, resulting in reduced attendance. After moving from Boston, the team began to be based in Jacksonville and changed its name to Jacksonville T. Men.
