History

The Swiss national team held their first match on April 11, 1973. The team met with the Portuguese in Neuchatel . The hosts lost with a score of 4:23 and a year later suffered another defeat from Belgium (10:18). In 1975, the rivals met again, and the Belgians won again (33: 3). In the next meeting, Swiss rugby players defeated the Yugoslavs (12: 3). The second and last victory of the team in the 70s took place in 1977: the team won against Luxembourg (7: 4). In 1979, the Swiss largely lost to Monaco (0:43) and Portugal (0:31). However, the match with the Monegasques did not have a high status and is not considered the largest defeat of the team in history.

In 1980, Switzerland again won against Luxembourg (10: 7), and also slightly lost to the Swedes and Belgians. A year later, rugby players again lost to Portugal, not earning a single point. The Swiss offset the loss by defeating Danish rugby players . In 1982, the team suffered two more defeats from Belgium and Sweden, but then it won big against the Finns (60: 0). After that, the team lost nine meetings in a row, and interrupted a series of failures only in May 1986, defeating Yugoslavia (5: 0).

In 1989, the national team attempted to qualify for the 1991 World Cup . The team finished third in Group 2A , winning one victory in three matches. Four years later, the Swiss again tried to overcome the European qualifications. The team went through the preliminary round, but in the first mainly failed to leave the group.

The selection for the next championship was also unsuccessful for the team. Switzerland took third place in a group of six teams, having won and drawn a match once. The next qualification cycle was a little more successful, in which rugby players won the group in the first round, but could not stand the competition in the second stage. A similar result was achieved by the team in the selection for the French world championship in 2007.

The team takes 41 place in the world ranking of the International Rugby Council [3] .
