62P / Zijinshan

Comet Zijinshan 1 (62P / Tsuchinshan) is a short-period comet from the Jupiter family, which was discovered on January 1, 1965 by Chinese astronomers at the Zijinshan Observatory ( Nanjing , PRC ). The comet was then in the constellation Gemini and had a brightness of 15.0 m . It has a rather short period of revolution around the Sun - a little less than 6.4 years.

Observation History

The announcement of the discovery of the comet was delayed for several weeks, so it was possible to confirm the discovery of a new comet only on February 9th - it was discovered on his photographic plates by Philip Veron, an astronomer of the Palomar Observatory .

The first orbit was calculated by Leland Cunningham. He found that the three available Chinese positions were somewhat inconsistent, however, taking two of them for calculations and combining them with observations at the Palomar Observatory, he managed to calculate the orbit. Shortly after the last observation of the comet on April 24, the Zijinshan Observatory also announced the end of the calculations in an elliptical orbit, according to which the orbital period was to be 7.22 years. By the end of 1965, G. Sitarsky, using all the positions of the comet received from January 1 to April 24, revised the elliptical orbit - the period of revolution was 6.62 years. Sitarsky also noted that on December 12, 1960, the comet experienced rather close proximity with Jupiter to a distance of 0.145 a. e. (21.75 million km), which entailed a change in its orbit and a reduction in the period of circulation, which until that time was 7.15 years.

Sitarsky prepared a forecast for the comet's return date in 1971, according to which the perihelion date was September 18, 1971. On December 20, American astronomers Elizabeth Roemer and LM Vaughn restored this comet. The obtained data on the positions of the comet made it possible to establish that Sitar's forecast requires a correction of -1.53 days. The brightness of the comet was estimated at 20.3 m . The comet was observed for another three months until March 10, 1972, when its brightness dropped to 21.4 m .

Then the comet returned to the point of perihelion on May 7, 1978, January 2, 1985, August 30, 1991, and April 19, 1998, when it reached a maximum brightness of 12.5 m . It was last observed in 2004, when its brightness reached 11.0 m . In 2011, it was not possible to observe the comet, since it was on the opposite side of the Sun.

Interestingly, on April 2, 2049 , the comet will pass at a distance of 1.6 million km from Mars .
