Story

Bomberman is training to take part in special competitions on his planet - Bomb-A-Lympics and win the title of hero. Competitions include various disciplines and tests, tied to the bomberman’s ability to create bombs. Six competitors take part in them, including the White Bomber. Each participant must fight a different team and pass various tests in their style. Having run through several arenas with tests, the participant in a duel with the team leader to defeat him. Opponents are several teams - Electric Dragons (Electric Dragons), Red Phoenix (Red Phoenix), Sea Princess (Princess Mariners), Iron Bulldozers (Iron Bulldozers) and Storm Giants (Storm Giants). Since the White Bomber is already holding the title of Hero of Planet Bomber, he is given the chance to enter the competition first. With the help of his skills, he must defeat all the other leaders and become the Master Bomber.

Gameplay

For the victory over any team is given one of five gold medals. The player in the process can choose with which team he will fight on. There are five teams in total, and each has its own methods and rules of struggle:

Survival Rule

Discipline team "Electric Dragons". This is a classic style, transferred from other games about Bombermen. In the allotted time it is necessary to destroy all opponents with the help of bombs and make sure that they do not do the same. When time begins to come to an end, indestructible blocks fall from above, severely limiting the space for combat, and thus forcing one of the parties to lose and end the match. Boss - GromoBomber (Thunder Bomber).

Hyper Bomber Rule

Discipline team "Red Phoenix". In this mode, the enemies and Bomberman himself can die an unlimited number of times, while they lose the collected items and prizes. The main purpose is to collect special panels. As soon as one of the participants collects three such panels, he should reach the “funnel” in the center of the arena and stand on it. In this case, a powerful explosion sweeps through the entire arena, destroying the rest, and the match is considered to be won.

Bosses - Bomber Brothers (Bomber Brothers).

Submarine rule

Battles under this discipline take place on the water. The rival team - "Sea Princess". The arena is divided into two equal parts, on the left half is Bomberman, and on the other half - participants from the opposing team. Special bombs, equipped with a timer, are sent through the undercurrent to the opponent on the same cell where it was placed. If the opponent at this time put his bomb on this cell, the first bomb goes back to the one who put it. In some levels, there are also pipes and currents that complicate the task. The goal is to destroy all opponents in their arena.

Boss - Bomber Mermaid (Bomber Mermaid).

Panel Paint Rule

One of the most difficult disciplines, belonging to the Iron Bulldozers team. Participants must use bombs to turn the plates on the floor of the arena, thereby painting them in "their" color. With the help of special explosive plates, you can quickly paint half of the arena, but you need to make sure that the explosion does not hurt the participant himself. The winner is the one whose color in the arena is left more by the end of the round.

Boss - Bomber Gunrock.

Ring match rule

The battles take place on different floors of the Storm Giants team tower. In this mode, participants do not die, but fly out of the arena. Using simple bombs, you should knock opponents out of the field as many times as possible, and make sure that they do not do the same. Each participant has a counter above his head, which shows the number of points for scored "departures." Each opponent from the arena adds two points. If the opponent knocks out Bomberman, two points are taken from him. The winner is the one who has more points by the end of the round.

Boss - Aladdin Bomber (Aladdin Bomber).

Bonus Panels

By performing the special actions described before the start of the round at the bottom of the screen, the player can earn special collection panels (Pieces), and discover new details and costumes for his Bomberman. In normal game mode, you cannot equip these costumes, they are intended only for online fights. The armor, in which Bomberman is shown at the end of the opening video, gets the latest when collecting all the panels.

Multiplayer

The game has several types of multiplayer - a game with friends (up to 4 players participate) directly through the joysticks and online, where the player can compete with other players from around the world. The latter feature is no longer available due to the disconnection of the game servers in 2003. Offline multiplayer includes both classic and new arenas with various modes and settings. After the match is over, the winner can play the Bomber Karate mini-game, similar to the bonus round from the Mortal Kombat game . If a player can break a stack of plates with one exact blow, he will receive additional items in the next match.

Reviews and further distribution

Bomberman Online received positive reviews from players and the press. The average rating is 8.6 out of 10, the Metacritic website gave the game 80 points out of a possible 100. Critics praised both the gameplay itself and the possibility of a network game, calling it all “the immortal classic for the Dreamcast”. Some also answered that the game is “one of the most successful in the series” and that “with the help of multiplayer, the old concept of the game is felt newer”.

Some details have been adapted to episodes of the 52-serial anime "Bomberman Jetters." In particular, almost all the leaders of the teams (except for the Bomber Brothers and Aladdin Bomber) acted as the enemy Bombermen created by the villain of Mujo. In the anime, their design and names were changed.
