Biography
Born in 1792 in Cua. He participated in the War of Independence of Venezuela , then served in the army of the state of Colombia . After the collapse of Colombia and the formation of a separate state, Venezuela joined the Cabinet of Vargas in 1835. During the Civil War, Vargas was overthrown and sent into exile in St. Thomas , but soon the capital was again taken under control by government forces, and on July 27, 1835 Paes created the Governing Council, in which Carreño became chairman. On August 20, Vargas returned to power.
After Vargas resigned in 1836, the duties of the president began to be performed by the vice president of Narvarte , who made Carreño his vice president. However, on January 20, 1837, Narvarte's term of office as constitutional vice president expired, and on January 26, 1837, the Electoral College convened to elect a new vice president. It was Carlos Sublette , but he was in Spain at that moment, and he assumed the duties of the country's president only on March 11, 1837. In the period between the end of the powers of Narvarte and the beginning of the exercise of powers of Sublette, Carreño acted as president of the country.
José Maria Carreño died on May 18, 1849 in Caracas .
