The site for the construction of a new church was chosen in March 1809 - at the intersection of Park ( Park Street ) and Tremont Street , where previously the Boston granary was located [2] .
Park Street Church was built by architect Peter Banner ( Peter Banner ). It is believed that this project was made in the style inspired by the works of the famous English architect Christopher Wren (1632-1723) [1] . In particular, the spire of Park Street Church was designed in the image of the spire of London’s Church [2] .
During the war of 1812, gunpowder was stored in the basement of the church. Since then, for the place where the church is located, the name “sulfur corner” ( English Brimstone Corner ) [1] [4] .
The height of the church with a spire is 217 feet (66 m) [5] . After completion in 1810, it became the highest building in Boston, surpassing the Old North Church . Park Street Church remained the city’s tallest building until 1867, when the Church of the Covenant was built.
