Biography

According to unanimous opinion, al-Sauri was born in Kufa in the year 97 of the Hijra . He began to gain knowledge under the guidance of his father, who was a muhaddis , tabiin and a student of scholars such as Amir al-Shaabi and Khaysama ibn Abdurrahman.

Among the sheikhs of al-Sauri there were about six hundred ulama , some of which conveyed hadiths from the words of Abu Khuraira , Ibn Abbas , Jarir ibn Abdullah and others.

A lot of muhaddis were transmitted from al-Sauri, up to his teachers ( Abul-Faraj ibn al-Jawzi mentioned a figure of 20 thousand), the most famous of which were: al-Amash , Jafar al-Sadik , Abu Hanifa , al-Auzai , Shu'ba , Sufyan ibn Uyayna , Abu Dawood at-Tayalisi , Abu Asim, Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak , Abdurrazak al-Sanani , Abu Nuaym al-Isfahani , Fudail ibn Iyad , Malik ibn Anas , Waki Ibn al-Jar .

Sufyan al-Sauri was an expert in mathematics. He asked al-Hajjaj al-Mattar 10 tasks that he could not solve [3] .

Sufyan al-Sauri was a very famous religious authority. Narrated by Yahya ibn Ayyub al-Abid that Abul-Musanna said:

I heard people say in Merv : “Al-Sauri has come! Al-Sauri came! ” And I went out to look at him and he turned out to be a small youth (lit. with piercing stubble).

قال يحيى بن أيوب العابد: حدثنا أبو المثنى قال: سمعتهم بمرو يقولون: قد جاء الثوري ، قد جاء الثور. فخرجت أنظر إليه ، فإذا هو غلام قد بقل وجهه.

Shortly before his death, al-Sauri moved to Basra and suffered from a disease of the abdomen. He died in 161 and his janazu , according to the will, was performed by Abdul-Malik ibn Abjar al-Kufi.
