Standard

The standard will be defined by two versions of the format: SIFF 1.0 and SIFF 2.0. The standard was developed by Sega in 1996. The standard describes a stereo image construction scheme, which, unlike a stereo pair, does not store two images for each frame (for the left and right eye), but only the image for the left and the data necessary to construct the image for the right eye based on the image for the left eye. SIFF means two files, one regular high-definition video file and a data file.

Record

A stereo movie compressed according to the SIFF standard, most often, a high-definition video file encoded by m2ts or MVC codecs and a data file with a resolution of .siff placed in a container with a resolution of .ISO and recorded on a BD25 or BD50. The competing stereo movie compression format is most often the placement of high-definition stereoscopic films encoded using the H.264 codec and placed in an MKV container. As a result, the presentation of stereo films according to the SIFF standard is a specialized presentation of it specifically for stereo with the ability to read in normal mode (media players that do not support it just read a high-definition video file), and not the ability to record a stereo movie in the usual format, as a rule without the ability to read in normal mode (a media player that does not support stereo mode will output video with a stereo pair).

Storage

The physical storage device may be:

  • Bluray-disks (officially films are recorded on VD with a volume of 25 or 50 GB.)
  • hard drives of servers (for streaming video), a computer (as an ISO file), or any medium of sufficient volume.

Play

Recently, with the increase in the number of TVs supporting the display of stereo images, the number of devices capable of playing stereo movies in SIFF format has increased, the main types of these devices:

  • Bluray players
  • network media players
  • smart tvs
  • software media players for computers.

List of software media players supporting this format:

  • PowerDVD 10 Ultra 3D, PowerDVD 11 version and higher;
  • Arcsoft TotalMedia Theater 5 and above.
