History
The United States established diplomatic relations with Ecuador in 1848, after his withdrawal from the federation with Colombia . The United States and Ecuador have partnerships, they have common interests in combating drug trafficking, reducing poverty, promoting economic development, increasing trade, protecting American citizens and their interests in Ecuador.
The United States and Ecuador are making efforts to improve diplomatic relations. The two countries embarked on a bilateral dialogue in 2008. In 2009, the American air base was closed near the city of Manta (west of Ecuador) [1] . The dialogue between the two countries was suspended in April 2011, after the government of Ecuador declared the then US ambassador persona non grata . In response to these actions, the Ambassador of Ecuador was immediately expelled from the United States. In September 2011, both countries announced that they would again exchange ambassadors.
Bilateral Economic Relations
The United States is Ecuador's main trading partner. US exports to Ecuador: machinery, chemicals and fertilizers, computers and electronic equipment, petroleum products, vehicles, cereals and grains, paper. Ecuador benefits from the duty-free import of many goods to the United States. US imports from Ecuador: oil, shrimp, bananas, cocoa, and cut flowers ( roses ). Two countries have signed a bilateral investment agreement.
