History
Hartford was founded in 1716 by Benning Wentworth , Governor of New Hampshire .
Geography
The city is located in the eastern part of Vermont, near the administrative border with the state of New Hampshire , on the banks of the White River , approximately 67 kilometers southeast (SSE) from Montpelier , the state's administrative center. The absolute height is 160 meters above sea level [1] .
According to the US Census Bureau , the city’s area is 118.9 km², of which 116.5 km² is land and 2.4 km² (i.e. 2.02%) on the water surface.
Demographics
According to the 2000 census [2] , 10 367 people, 2800 families lived in Hartford, there were 4509 household units and 5493 residential buildings. The average population density was about 47 people per square kilometer.
According to the census, the racial makeup of the city was as follows: 97.02% White , 0.55% African American , 0.31% Native American , 0.88% Asian , 0.03% Pacific Rim , 1, 05% - representatives of mixed races, 0.16% - of other nationalities. Hispanics accounted for 0.85% of all residents.
Of the 4509 households, 28.7% raised children under the age of 18 years, 48.8% were married couples living together, in 10.2% of the families women lived without husbands, 37.9% did not have a family. 30.6% of the total number of families at the time of the census lived independently, while 10.9% were single elderly people aged 65 years and older. The average household size was 2.28 people and the average family size was 2.86 people.
The population of the city by age range according to the 2000 census was as follows: 23.4% - residents under 18 years old, 5.9% - between 18 and 24 years old, 29.3% - from 25 to 44 years old, 26.7% - from 45 to 64 years old and 14.7% - at the age of 65 years and older. The average age of residents was 40 years. For every 100 females in Brattleboro, 89.9 are males, while for every hundred females 18 years and older, 86.9 are males also over 18 years old.
The median income per household in the city was $ 42,990 , and the median income per family was $ 51,286. At the same time, men had an average income of $ 35,969 a year, compared to $ 27,073 of the average annual income for women. The per capita income for the city was $ 22,792 per year. 5.3% of the total number of families in the city and 8.5% of the total population were below the poverty line at the time of the census, with 8.8% of those under the age of 18 and 4.9% of those aged 65 and older.
