Biography
Born in the family of Professor V. L. Kirpichev August 23, 1879 in St. Petersburg. He received secondary education in the 3rd Kharkov Gymnasium, the highest - in the St. Petersburg Institute of Technology , which he graduated in 1907.
Scientific and pedagogical activity of Mikhail Viktorovich proceeded at the Leningrad Institute of Physics and Technology , the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute , the Central Boiler-Turbine Institute and the Energy Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences . He also taught at the Moscow Energy and Chemical Engineering Institutes.
A great contribution to science is the work of M. V. Kirpichiov on the theory of similarity and the theory of modeling technical devices, on the basis of which it is possible to study the work of any technical device in the design process and create its most advanced design. He was engaged in a wide range of theoretical and engineering problems of heat engineering, especially in the field of convective heat exchange in pipes of various sections, hydrodynamic theory of heat exchange in heat and power plants, ventilation in buildings.
Together with A. A. Gukhman, he is the author of the so-called inverse theorem of the theory of similarity, which establishes the necessary and sufficient conditions for the similarity between physical phenomena.
Along with the research work M. Kirpichev was engaged in training, engaged in teaching activities in many institutions. Under his leadership, brought up several hundred engineers, more than a hundred doctors and candidates of technical sciences.
He died in 1955, was buried in Moscow at the Novodevichy Cemetery (1st station, 45th row, 14th place) [2] .
Curious Facts
The positive feedback of academician M. V. Kirpichyov in January 1949 on the proposal of the chief electrical engineer Glavsakhalinrybproma A. A. Gavronsky to create a geothermal power station in Kamchatka had a decisive influence on a positive decision on this issue: a year later, relevant investigations of the USSR Academy of Sciences were launched on the peninsula , and after another 4.5 years, a decision was made to build a geothermal power station there [3] .
