Initially, Bulyuk Gerai was brought up at the court of the Astrakhan Khan. In 1545, the Crimean khan besieged and took Astrakhan . 10-year-old prince Buluk Gerai was taken by Sahib Gerai to the Crimea and brought up at the Khan's court.

In March 1549, 38-year-old Kazan Khan Safa Gerai died under unclear circumstances. He had three sons: Buluk Gerai, Mubarek Gerai and Otemish Gerai . Only the two-year-old Otemish was with his father in Kazan. The eldest sons Bulyuk and Mubarek lived at the court of the Crimean Khan Sahib I Geray .

After the death of Safa Gerai, Kazan beys sent a messenger to the Crimean Khan Sahib I Gerai, asking him to send to Kazan the eldest son of Safa , Buluk Gerai, to the khan’s throne. Sahib I, who wanted to put one of his sons on the Kazan throne, refused to send Bulyuk Geray to Kazan under the pretext of his infancy. By the Khan's decree, princes Bulyuk and Mubarek Gerai were detained in the fortress of Inkerman .

In 1551, the Ottoman sultan Suleiman the Magnificent decided to remove from power the objectionable to him Khan Sahib I Geray and appointed his nephew Devlet Geray as the new khan. At this time, Sahib I with a large army came from the Crimea on a campaign in the Caucasus. The new Khan Devlet I Gerai with a large detachment of Turkish Janissaries landed in Gezlev and quickly occupied Bakhchisarai . Devlet I ordered the release of the brothers Bulyuk and Mubarek Geraev from the Inkerman dungeon. The new khan instructed Bulyuk Gerai to kill the elderly Sahib I Gerai. Buluk Gerai with a group of Janissaries arrived in Taman , where he personally killed the deposed Khan.

Khan Devlet I Gerai first approached his relative Buluk Gerai and appointed him kalga, the second person in the khanate after the khan. However, soon the khan suspected him of " some bad intentions " and personally killed him with his dagger.
