History

In June 1941, preparations began for the installation of a monument to Lenin. Among the designers there were about 10 sculptors from Kiev , Odessa and Lviv (among Lviv - Yu. Stazhinsky and M. Grandson). It should have been completed by 1942, but the discovery took place 12 years later.

January 20, 1952 a monument was erected in front of the entrance to the Opera and Ballet Theater. The author of the monument was the sculptor S. D. Merkurov , architects V. Sharapenko and S. Franz took part in the project. In 1959, the central street of the city was named Lenin Avenue.

This monument was dismantled with the sanction of local authorities on September 14, 1990 [1] . The bronze figure was later melted, and the metal obtained was used to build a monument to the victims of communist repressions in Lviv. After dismantling the monument to Lenin, it turned out that the pedestal of this monument was built from tombstones of the Jewish cemetery .
