Biography

Born in Schneitzlroit in Bavaria. In 1929 he graduated from high school in Ettal .

In 1930 he entered the University of Ludwig-Maximilian , where in 1936 he defended his doctoral dissertation on theology "Providence and pre-history in Byzantine theological literature" (Vorhersehung und Vorherbestimmung in der theologischen Literatur der Byzantiner), which was published in Rome the following year 114 th volume of the Orientalia Christiana Analecta series. In 1949, at the Faculty of Philosophy, he defended the rehabilitation work “Theodor Metohit: The Crisis of the Byzantine Worldview in the XIV Century” (Theodoros Metochites. Die Krise des byzantinischen Weltbildes im 14. Jahrhundert). This work was praised by the Byzantinists.

In 1956 he became a freelance professor, in 1959-1975 he was a professor at the Department of Byzantine Studies and Modern Greek Philology of the University of Munich, Dean of the Department of Philosophy in 1962-1963. He was vice president of the humanities of the German Research Association (1965-1968) and a member of the scientific council under the federal government of Germany (1968). He took an active part in the creation of the German training center in Venice and was its president in 1970-1984. For active social activities he received the Grand Cross for services to the German state (1981) and the Bavarian Order of Maximilian in the field of sciences and art (1988).

He was a member of many national Academies of Sciences and scientific societies. In 1962, he became a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , headed commissions on the issues of publishing the Corps of Greek Acts, and on patristics. In 1966, he was elected a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences , in 1975 he became a foreign member of the Athens Academy , in 1977 he was admitted to the British Academy of Sciences (member) and the Royal Royal Academy of Belgium, and in 1988 to the American Philosophical Society .
