The presence of thymidine kinase in cells infected with herpes viruses activates many antiviral drugs against herpes and therefore these drugs only work in infected cells.
Herpesvirus thymidine kinase-activated antiviral drugs:
- Guanine purine analogues: acyclovir , famciclovir , ganciclovir , penciclovir , valaciclovir , valganciclovir
- vidarabine
- Pyrimidine analogues of uridine : idoxuridine , trifluridine
- brivudine
