Season One
Episode 1.1. German
England, May 1940. In connection with the outbreak of war, an atmosphere of distrust and suspicion reigns in the country. The authorities are interning citizens of "hostile states." Senior Superintendent Christopher Foyle arrests a corrupt official who helped conscripts evade conscription. The bombing of civilian objects begins, which contributes to the emergence of anti-German sentiments among the local population. Foyle escorts his son Andrew to the training camp - he is preparing to become a military pilot. The main storyline of the episode is the investigation of the brutal murder of the wife of a local judge, a Sudeten German by birth. Foyle visits the former police sergeant Paul Milner, who lost his leg in the battle at Trondheim, and invites him to work together. After some thought, Milner agrees.
Episode 1.2. White feather
Hitler's troops occupy the Netherlands, Belgium and France, and at any time can invade the territory of England. Panic tendencies are beginning to spread among the local population of coastal areas. Paul Milner’s wife cannot come to terms with her husband’s injury: her displeasure is manifested by outbursts of irritation and sharp comments about her husband. An employee of the White Pen hotel was arrested, cutting a telephone wire leading to a military unit. Investigation into this incident of sabotage leads Detective Foyle to the lair of the Friday Club pro-Nazi club, whose meetings are secretly held in the White Pere. During one of these gatherings in the hall, the lights suddenly go out, after which three shots are fired. When the light comes on, it turns out that the hostess of the hotel, who also took part in the Nazi meeting, was shot dead. It is not clear whether she was the true target of the killer or was an accidental victim. The suspects are all the hotel guests, as well as the unknown, seen that night near the scene.
Episode 1.3. Murder lesson
The tribunal is considering the case of a young man, a staunch pacifist who refused to perform military service. Shortly after the sentence was pronounced, he was found hanged in his cell. Threats are being received against the judge who presided over the tribunal. It also becomes known that this judge from time to time demonstrates biased doubts in professional cleanliness in determining the truth of the pacifist convictions of certain individuals. One morning, an explosion is heard in a summer house next to the judge’s mansion, as a result of which an 11-year-old boy dies. There is an assumption that the child was the accidental victim of this cruel crime, while the real owner was the manor of the manor. Among the suspects, the judge names the name of a young man who has recently been giving signs of attention to his daughter. Detective Foyle puts the guard to the judge and his family and begins investigative actions. After a short time, the judge himself becomes a victim of the assassination attempt: he was shot almost at close range with several bullets from his own revolver. An investigation of Detective Foyle leads to unexpected results.
Episode 1.4. Eagle Day [2]
Detective Foyle's son, Andrew, is returning to Hastings from a training camp. He is assigned to a local radar station. In the ruins of a house destroyed by bombing, the corpse of a 42-year-old truck driver is found, with a kitchen knife in his chest and a gold medallion squeezed in his hand. Samantha's father comes to visit her daughter and tries to convince her to refuse to serve in the police, because he considers such service dangerous and unworthy girl. On the radar mysterious events occur. In particular, during one of the training flights the identifier on board the aircraft is broken, which almost leads to a catastrophe. A few days later, Andrew is arrested on a ridiculous conspiracy charge. Detective Foyle becomes aware of the moral untidiness of radar officers. At the same time, another murder is reported: the victim is the head of Andrew Foyle, captain Graham.
Season Two
Episode 2.1. Fifty ships
September 1940. On the coast, they find the corpse of a local hardware dealer Richard Hunter, an alcoholic, the father of one of the firefighters suspected of looting. The pistol found in the victim’s hand lacks two bullets, so the version of suicide appears to be questionable to the senior superintendent Foyle. It also becomes known that the day before, Hunter met with his old university friend, who is visiting influential American millionaire Paige in Hastings, and asked him for money. On the same days, the photographer of the local newspaper disappears - his car with traces of struggle is found on a deserted country road. Unexpectedly, assistance in the investigation comes from a foreigner who is detained in the city and is accused of espionage.
Episode 2.2. One of the best
Competent authorities become aware of petrol thefts occurring in the fuel depot - about three percent of production is lost. As an undercover agent, Samantha Stewart is sent to the company: she will drive a truck with fuel and collect information. Andrew Foyle and his best friend Rex, also a pilot, have a romantic relationship with two girls, Connie and Violit, working women of the same fuel depot. One morning, Connie is found murdered in her own house. Several people fall under suspicion at once, including Andrew, - he was the last one who saw the girl alive, as he had taken her home the night before.
Episode 2.3. War games
October 1940. From the window of a high-rise building in London, the secretary of one of the largest food processing companies in England falls and crashes to death. Shortly thereafter, an unknown penetrates the country house of the owner of this company, Reginald Walker, and opens the safe in the office of a businessman. However, the owner of the mansion says Foyle arrived at the scene that nothing was missing from the safe. A few days later, during a military exercise held on the land of Reginald Walker, Harry Markham, a militant who lived in the same area as a burglary who had just been released from prison two months earlier, dies. Detective Foyle also becomes aware that the Walker company, despite the legislative prohibition, continued to conduct trade negotiations with representatives of the Third Reich, and that there was some secret agreement of intent, the publicity of which could greatly harm Reginald Walker and his son.
Episode 2.4. Rat hole
In one of the towns on the south coast theft of a large batch of food was committed. During the escape from the crime scene, one of the robbers is wounded and later dies. In connection with the beginning of the bombing of London, many wealthy residents of the capital moved to the countryside. And even after the intensity of the bomb strikes has decreased, they are in no hurry to return home. For this excessive caution, Londoners, who, according to Detective Foyle, “have more money than conscience,” are considered cowards, and their country refuges — hotels and boarding houses — are contemptuously called “rat holes”. One of these resorts becomes a stage for intrigue between the guests, deception, theft and blatant blackmail. Here, a young man named Daniel Parker, a participant in a food store robbery, is listed as a utility worker. As a result of the unsuccessful forced landing, Andrew Foyle gets a minor injury and during his week-long vacation moves closer to Samantha - they begin to meet. Detective Foyle is suspended from work for an indefinite period on a clearly contrived charge of "publicly expressing discontent and forming negative public opinion in wartime." Investigation of crimes in Hastings and the surrounding area will now be handled by Sergeant Milner and interim Foyle inspector Colyer.
Season Three
Episode 3.1. French throw
February 1941. One of the operations of the Office of Special Operations (ODR) in Northern France ends in failure: the paratrooper-saboteur dies immediately after landing. The leaders of the organization have an assumption that a “mole” has wound up in the organization, and the organization itself is subject to growing criticism from the government [3] . Senior Superintendent Foyle wants to make a greater contribution to the fight against the enemy. He receives a proposal to transfer to Liverpool, to the newly created command center of the Navy. Meanwhile, another extraordinary event occurs in Hastings: after a night blast, an unknown body was found in one of the shops. By a strange coincidence, a warehouse of a local merchant, Jack Fenner, who had previously been seen in speculation with scarce goods, is located nearby. The investigation has three versions: suicide, murder and accident. Evidence - no. The only clue is an expensive gold watch found on the victim. It soon turns out that the deceased is the son of a high-ranking defense official, General Giles Massinger, and that his relationship with his father was not simple. Investigation leads Detective Foyle to the ODR secret training base.
Episode 3.2. Enemy fire
In the hospital, which is housed in a private mansion, requisitioned by the Air Force command, minor acts of sabotage and accidents regularly occur: someone spoils and steals drugs, destroys bedding and disables hospital equipment, and once from a roof to a car parked at the entrance people are confronted with a massive stone statue. Owing to the negligence of the aviation mechanic Gordon Drake, severe burns of the face and hands are caused by a colleague and best friend of Andrew Foyle, 19-year-old pilot Greville Woods. In addition, it is known that Gordon severely beats his wife and secretly visits the spouse of the military surgeon Brian Renn. Therefore, when one morning Drake is found murdered near his own house, Foyle has reason to suspect several people at once in this crime, including his own son.
Episode 3.3. They fought in the fields
April 1941. Two pilots of a downed German bomber were captured, and two more servicemen who were on board died on landing. Detective Foyle draws attention to the fact that instead of three people in the crew of the plane there were four. The owner of one of the farms, Hugh Jackson, was found shot dead. Someone is trying to imagine what happened to be a suicide, although the senior superintendent Foyle at first glance makes it clear that this is a murder. The farmer’s wife fled with a seasonal worker many years ago, and the son of the deceased goes to military service in a unit near by. The farm also employs two girls, called in the so-called. agricultural army. One of them has a romantic relationship with the son of the owner of the farm. The next morning, after Hugh Jackson was killed, another German paratrooper was found near the crash site: he was injured when he landed, but he survived. The parachuter's holster is empty - there is no personal weapon.
Episode 3.4. War of nerves
June 1941. Senior Superintendent Foyle is assigned to monitor the leftist activist Raymond Carter, who is suspected of subversive activity, who has arrived in Hastings. In the meantime, construction materials are being stolen at the local shipyard, and the owners of the company, the Talbot brothers, refuse to admit this loss. During the disposal of an unexploded aerial bomb that fell on an abandoned warehouse, the sappers discover a large amount of money. Unable to resist the temptation, they put money inside the bomb and take it with them. However, in the evening of the same day, unknown persons abduct one of the sappers, torture him and eventually kill him. When inspecting the site of the fall of the bomb, Sergeant Milner finds the remains of explosives and other signs that the bomb was dismantled right in the warehouse. And Detective Foyle, having talked with the Talbot brothers and, later, with the local trade union leader, drew attention to the discrepancy between the number of employees actually working at the shipyard, and officially registered at the enterprise. It becomes clear that we are talking about large-scale fraud, organized by the shipyard owners [4] .
At the end of the episode, left-wing activist Raymond Carter reports to Foyle and his colleagues: “Great news! The Nazis attacked Russia. Churchill promised to help Stalin, so now we are on the same side. I'm sure the war will end soon. ” The participants raise glasses for the victory to the beginning of the new, in 1942.
Season Four (Part 1)
Episode 4.1. Invasion
March 1942 The unceremoniousness of the American infantry from the composition of the expeditionary forces arriving on the south coast causes a certain hostility towards them from the local population. Farmer David Barrett is outraged that on his land, requisitioned by the government for military needs, the Americans are going to build an airfield: he meets an Allied motorcade with a gun in his hands and even shoots one of the jeeps. During a fire in his own house, the former colleague of Sergeant Milner, William Grayson, who had arrived from the unit for short-term vacation a few days earlier, dies. Barmaid Susan Davis found strangled during a party in the building of the old school - the location of the American part. Among those suspected of a crime is a private soldier James Taylor who recently met with a girl; Alan Carter, in the bar where he worked killed and where illegal operations with alcohol were carried out; as well as Susan's former boyfriend, sailor Ben Barrett, who had just returned home for a leave after a long absence.
Episode 4.2. Bad blood
August 1942 Experiments with biological weapons are underway at the military base. During transportation, they lose the body of one of the sheep who died from anthrax: it falls out of the truck directly onto the road. In the area located near the scene of the incident, an epidemic begins: livestock die, people become infected. A young man named Martin Ashford, a Quaker who does alternative farm work, is accused of killing a war hero, a sailor Tom Jenkins. Martin's older sister Idit Ashford, Sergeant Milner’s childhood friend, is confident of her brother’s innocence and turns to Senior Superintendent Foyle for help. At the same time, another corpse is found in the forest nearby: a young woman, Joana Chaplin, is killed, and it is known that she was engaged in prostitution in the port of Dover. American infantryman Jo Farnetti makes an offer to Samantha Stewart. The girl asks Joe not to rush her with the answer, and a few days later she goes to the hospital with symptoms of anthrax.
Season Four (Part 2)
Episode 4.3. Harsh winter
December 1942 During an explosion at an ammunition factory, a young worker, Grace Philips, dies. The production manager is trying to present this incident as a simple consequence of a security breach. However, in the course of the investigation undertaken by Detective Foyle, the facts of Grace’s involvement in the theft from the warehouse of explosives and the attempts of the unknown to hide these facts emerge. After a two-year absence, the wife of Sergeant Milner Jane returns to the city. She is trying to improve relations with her husband, but he informs her that he is dating another woman - Goes Ashford - and does not intend to return to her previous life. Meeting Milner with his wife in the hotel lobby ends in a quarrel, which is witnessed by visitors and employees of cafes. That same evening, Jane is killed by hitting him on the head with a stone in a deserted alley. No one believes Sergeant Milner’s involvement in this crime, but the evidence he finds points to him. It also becomes known that Jane was well acquainted with the girl who died in the factory.
Episode 4.4. The victims of the war.
March 1943. Lidia Nicholson, Foyle's goddaughter, whom he had not seen for about ten years, unexpectedly arrives in Hastings. Lydia's nine-year-old son, James, survived the bombing some time ago — he survived, but due to the shocks he experienced stopped talking. A mysterious lodger of an abandoned mansion, who calls himself a pacifist, hires young brothers Morgan, Frank and Terry to carry out sabotage: they carry out a number of arson attacks on strategic sites and are preparing to make an explosion at a military base, where they are testing secret weapon - “jumping bomb” [5] . Sergeant Milner was instructed to investigate the activities of illegal gambling establishments, the network of which is deployed on the south coast. One night, a shot sounds on the territory of the military base, and the next morning, the corpse of Michael Richards, the husband of an employee of a secret research center, is found in the forest nearby. It is known that Richards regularly visited the underground casino and owed its organizers a large sum of money.
At the end of the episode, being, he believes, unable to protect justice from the intervention of higher-level officials and politicians, Detective Foyle submits his resignation.
Season Five
Episode 5.1. Attack plan
April 1944. Retired Detective Foyle is busy writing memoirs about the activities of the Hastings police station during the war years. Now the investigation of offenses in the city and the surrounding area is supervised by Superintendent John Meredith, who replaced him. The crime detection rate on the south coast has decreased over the past year, while the criminal situation has deteriorated: speculation, racketeering and theft from public funds are flourishing. Superintendent Meredith is concerned about the church conference held in Hastings and in a meeting with Bishop Francis Wood in a tough manner warns him to refrain from publicly preaching non-violence, because he believes that such statements from the mouth of the clergy on the eve of the upcoming large-scale operations against the Hitler forces would be able to do well. and their will to win. In the forest, the cartographer Henry Scott is hanged, and in the pocket of his jacket is a secret photograph of an object located in Germany. A number of clues indicate that the incident was not a suicide. It is also becoming known that Henry was a mentally unbalanced person and was acutely worried about his own, albeit indirect, involvement in the death of people during air strikes against German military targets. One evening, Sergeant Milner becomes the object of an attempt by the unknown - they shoot him. However, a bullet randomly hits Meredith and inflicts a mortal wound. Given the drama of the situation, Christopher Foyle decides to return to the police service.
Episode 5.2. Broken souls
October 1944. In the military rehabilitation center killed a young psychiatrist Julian Worth. Senior Superintendent Foyle is becoming aware that Worth was disliked by colleagues and patients, and recently he published an article in which, contrary to medical ethics, he used information from patient records of the center. Dr. Josef Novak, a Jewish immigrant from Poland, whose family — wife and daughter — is in a fascist concentration camp, is being suspected of the murder. Dr. Novak on the eve publicly showed irritation with the young colleague’s deed and said words of threat to him, and the next day after the death of Julian Worth attempted to commit suicide. Tommy Crookes, 15, a teenager who escaped from London, is hiding in the vicinity of Hastings: his mother died during the bombing - and now he hates the Germans and does not want to return home. Farmer Fred Dawson, who returned home after a five-year stay in fascist captivity, suspects his wife, Rose, of adultery. Soon, between Fred and the German prisoner of war Johann Schulz who worked on his farm, there is a serious altercation, and the next day the body of Johann with traces of violence is found in the lake nearby.
Episode 5.3. All clear
The beginning of May 1945. An atmosphere of general enthusiasm reigns on the south coast: the population of coastal cities is preparing to celebrate the upcoming Victory. However, when one of the members of the Hastings City Council committee, Dr. Henry Ziegler, is killed, and the other member, Mark Griffiths, reduces his life counts later that day, preparations for the celebrations have to be postponed - now Detective Foyle will have to take over his direct duties. The investigation leads Foyle to London, where he, using his personal connections in military intelligence, manages to get information about the strictly secret amphibious operation of the Allied forces a year ago, during which more than seven hundred servicemen were killed. It is also becoming aware of the involvement in the tragedy of Mark Griffiths, who at that time served in the communications forces and made negligence at the combat position.
Season Six
Episode 6.1. Russian house
June 1945 During the transportation, the Russian prisoner of war, Ivan Spiakov, who fought on the German side, managed to escape. He is entrusted to capture Foyle as a person who is well acquainted with the terrain around Hastings. At the same time, local artist Sir Leonard Spencer-Jones was shot dead in his own house. Under suspicion - a number of individuals: returned from the war and hoping to get a place from Sir Leonard Tom Bradley; son of Spencer-Jones, novice Labor politician Maurice Jones, with whom Sir Leonard had strained relations and whom he was going to disinherit; as well as another prisoner of war from Russia - 17-year-old Nikolai Vladchenko, who worked as a gardener on the estate of the artist and was afraid of forced repatriation to his homeland. It is known that Nikolai liked Sir Leonard, and the latter even hatched plans for his adoption. These plans shortly before his death, Leonard Spencer-Jones shared with his fellow lawyer Walter Hardiman, and he dedicated Maurice to them. Investigation leads Detective Foyle to London, where the activities of the so-called Russian House - the headquarters of the "white" movement - are mysteriously intertwined with the secret operations of the British special services for expelling Russian prisoners of war from the country. In London, Samantha meets a fellow countryman from Hastings, a young man named Adam Wenright, who recently inherited a small hotel on the south coast, and agrees to help him with his business.
Episode 6.2. Killing time
July 1945 In the boarding house of Adam Wenright, where Samantha Stewart is now working, among other guests is a young woman named Mandy Dean. Racial prejudices prevent others, including Mandy's mother and her just-returned guy Tom Tomgang, from accepting the fact that Mandy was born as a child by US military officer Gabe Cally, an African by birth. Gabe himself is under constant pressure from his white colleagues, and once, after a party at the club, he was severely beaten. Meanwhile, on the forest road near Hastings, similar robberies of wealthy citizens occur: valuable things are taken away from them at gunpoint. The appetites of the gangsters are growing - and now the attack on the cashier of the American military base has been committed: the monthly salary of the unit has been stolen. The development of events reaches its climax when, after an underground boxing match, in which Tom Duggan participated, in the forest near the base they find Mandy Dean's corpse. They are trying to accuse Gabe Callie of a crime, but it quickly becomes clear to Foyle that completely different people are involved in this matter.
Episode 6.3. Secret refuge
The war is over. Senior Superintendent Christopher Foyle finally resigns. However, he does not feel like a pensioner and is going to settle some unfinished business in the past. Foyle intends to go to the United States, where businessman Howard Page (episode of “Fifty Ships”), who escaped punishment for a crime committed during the war years, is located and try to bring him to justice. However, shortly before leaving for America, Detective Foyle draws attention to the upcoming trial of a young Englishman, James Devereaux, who is accused of treason for agreeing to fight on the side of the Nazis as part of the so-called British corps, and decides to stay at home to take feasible part this process. Meanwhile, Detective Milner begins the investigation into the case of the girl killed in Brighton by the name of Agnes Littleton, who worked as a secretary for Sir Charles Devereaux, a hereditary aristocrat and former member of parliament. By coincidence, Sir Charles is the father of an English soldier accused of betraying an English soldier, so the professional ways of former colleagues - detectives Foyle and Milner - again intersect.
Seventh season
Episode 7.1. Ring of eternity
1945 In the United States, on the territory of a military test site in the state of New Mexico, the first tests of nuclear weapons are being conducted. A year later, in 1946, MI-5 asks Inspector Foyle, who had just returned from a working trip to the USA, to help the secret service in investigating the activities of the Soviet spy network "The Ring of Eternity". The leaders of MI5 believe that in this situation the police techniques that Mr. Foyle is fluent in would be the most effective. In the case there is also a personal motive: the former driver of the inspector Foyle Samantha Wenright (nee Stewart), who now works as an assistant to Professor Fraser, is also suspected of involvement in espionage activities. The husband of Samantha, a young promising politician Adam Wenright, expects to get into the Parliament from the Labor Party. Another former colleague of Mr. Foyle, Constable Frank Shaw, is experiencing difficulties adapting to civilian life after participating in hostilities and being in captivity. Inspector Foyle successfully conducts the investigation entrusted to him and receives from the leaders of MI5 a proposal to cooperate with the secret service on an ongoing basis.
Episode 7.2. Cell
