Biography

Born in an educated family of writer, historian and diplomat Stephen Alexis. He received his primary education at a private Catholic school in Paris ( en: Collège Stanislas de Paris ). He received a bachelor's degree from the medical faculty of the University of Haiti in Port-au-Prince [2] . He traveled to Europe, lived in Cuba for several years. At the age of 18, he wrote his first essay on the work of the Haitian poet Hamilton Garota. Collaborated with a number of literary magazines [3] .

In 1959, he founded the Party of National Unity ( Parti pour l'Entente Populaire-PEP ), which adheres to leftist ideas, but was forced to leave the country due to persecution by the Duvalier regime. In August 1960, he took part in the Moscow meeting of representatives of communist and workers' parties of the world, in April 1961 he returned to Haiti, but was already captured at the airport by agents of the government of François Duvalier , who took him to the main square of Mol-Saint-Nicholas, subjected tortured, and then taken away in an unknown direction; later, the Haitian government officially confirmed his death.

The most famous novels are: Compère Général Soleil (1955), Les Arbres Musiciens (1957), and L'Espace d'un Cillement (1959), and for his collection of short stories, Romancero aux Etoiles (1960).
