Biography
Grew up in Tungabbi, a suburb of Sydney. He studied at the Royal School in Parramatta. He made several short films as a teenager.
He graduated from the University of Sydney . In 1962 he left for England in search of work in the cinema. Unable to break into the British screen, he worked as an editor for two years in Enugu ( Nigeria ). Upon returning to England, he worked as a producer of short films for novice directors at the British Film Institute .
In 1970, he returned to Australia, where two years later he directed his first full-length film, The Adventures of Barry Mackenzie. He gained a reputation as one of the best Australian directors.
After Buster Morant, which became a classic of Australian cinema, Beresford moved to Hollywood . In 1984, his first American film, Delicate Mercy , earned him the only Academy Award nomination for Best Director, and in 1989, his film Miss Daisy Driver won the Academy Award for Best Film.
He is also engaged in staging dramatic and opera performances.
In 2007 he published his memoirs.
