Oakwood Cemetery, originally known as the City Cemetery, is the oldest cemetery in Austin , Texas. Located on a hill; originally located on the outskirts of the city, it now turned out to be almost in its center.
History
The first graves in the cemetery date back to the mid-1850s. Although there is a legend that the first burials were made at this place much earlier, when the victims of the attack of the Comanche Indians attacked.
In 1907, the cemetery received its current name. To date, it has an area of about 160,000 m² and includes the historical part, sections for the burial of African Americans, Latinos and Jews. In the southern part of the cemetery there is a section for the graves of the unknown.
The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the USA in 1985.
