Biography

Augustin Bizimungu was born in Byumba Prefecture (present-day Northern Province of Rwanda ) [2] .

Bisimungu had the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Armed Forces of Rwanda until April 6, 1994. That day, after the death of Army Chief of Staff Deograsy Nsabimana ( fr. Déogratias Nsabimana ) in a plane crash, along with President Juvenal Habyarimana , Bisimungu was promoted to Major General and appointed commander of the troops [3] .

On April 12, 2002, the International Tribunal for Rwanda issued an arrest warrant to Bizimungu, who had been working with the UNITA rebel movement in Angola at that time. In August 2002, he was arrested by the Angolan government and taken to the location of the UN tribunal in Tanzania [4] . The trial was adjourned until September 2008, after which Bisimungu was convicted along with other officers of the Armed Forces of Rwanda: Augustin Ndindiliyimana ( fr. Augustin Ndindiliyimana ; chief of staff of the National Gendarmerie), Francois Xavier Nzuvonejonemey ( fr.
