Biography

His father was an architect and designer [7] who won the competition of the Belgian guild of St. Thomas, the prize of which was the allocation of money to create a church in Bruges, where he moved with his family and where Frank was born. The father was also fond of drawing and gave his son the first lessons of this art.

When the family moved back to England in 1874, Brangwin caught the attention of William Morris , who began teaching him how to draw at the South Kensington Museum. He worked for some time in Morris's studio, mainly painting pictures on the theme of the sea and modern urban life, and then went on trips to the East several times (Brangwin visited many countries in Asia and Africa), which significantly influenced his sense of color and everything further development of his work. It is believed that he, more than any other European artist, reflected in his work the influence of oriental decorative and applied art, including drawings on tiles and carpet weaving. His works were highly appreciated by contemporaries, became exhibits of many museums, he was elected an associate member of the Royal Academy in 1904.

During the First World War he created more than 80 posters on military subjects, in 1925-1926 he served as president of the Royal Society of Artists of Birmingham.

A collection of paintings by Branggin exhibited at the Gruning Museum (Bruges), the painting "Mercy" (1890) is stored in St. Petersburg in the State Hermitage Museum [8] .
