Biography

Christopher Jacob Boström studied in Uppsala, studied theology, which became the main interest of his life; from 1838 he was an associate professor, and from 1840 to 1863 - professor of practical philosophy at Uppsala University . For four years he was a teacher of children of the Swedish royal family [6] .

His philosophy, as he himself described it, was a rational idealism based on the principle that the only true reality is spiritual. God is the Infinite Spirit, which contains everything that exists, and is beyond the limits of time and space. Thus, with his teaching, Bostrom protested not only against empiricism, but also against the doctrines of Christian theology, which seemed to him representing God as something less than a pure spirit. In ethics, in his opinion, the highest goal is the direction of the cause in harmony with the Divine, therefore the state, like an individual, exists only within God, and its most perfect form is the harmonious obedience of all its members to the constitutional monarchy, and human perfection as a whole should be sought in a rational orderly system of such states living in obedience to the World Mind. This system differs from Platonism in that the “ideas” of God find expression in the form not of archetypal abstractions, but of specific personalities.
