Michael Stephen Portnoy ( April 20, 1967 , Chicago , Illinois ) is an American virtuoso drummer , a former member of the Dream Theater prog metal band . It is considered one of the best drummers of our time. Repeatedly won the nomination "The best drummer of the year." The second youngest drummer (after Neil Peart ), included in the Hall of Honor of Modern Drummer magazine (at age 37). Co- produced the last five Dream Theater albums with John Petrucci , starting with Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory . Wrote a significant number of lyrics starting with A Change of Seasons .

Musical career
Mike Portnoy grew up in the town of Long Beach on Long Island , in a Jewish family. His father worked as a DJ at a local radio station and played an important role in shaping the musical tastes of his son. Despite the fact that Mike learned to play the drums himself, he attended music theory lessons at school. At that time, he started playing in local bands such as Intruder, Rising Power and Inner Sanctum, which were later released on the album. . Mike left them after he received an education grant at Berkeley College of Music in Boston. Which, by the way, he did not finish, due to the fact that he could not combine classes in college with a time-consuming group.
In 2010, Mike received the Kawasaki Golden Gods Award for Best Drummer .
From February to December 2010 he acted as a temporary drummer for Avenged Sevenfold .
On September 8, 2010, he wrote on his Twitter and Facebook that he was leaving the Dream Theater group, his place was taken by Mike Mangini .
After 25 years of work, I decided to leave Dream Theater, the group that I founded, which I directed, and which I really loved for a quarter century. For many, this will be a real shock, and some, most likely, will not understand me, but please believe that this is not a spontaneous decision ... it has been brewing for a year now. I am sorry to disappoint Dream Theater fans around the world ... I tried my best to save the situation and find a way out of it ... I honestly only wanted a break (and not a split), but you cannot force a person to be happy, happiness comes from within.

In 2011, Portnoy began two collaborative projects - Adrenaline Mob with Symphony X vocalist Russell Allen [1] , and Flying Colors with Deep Purple guitarist Steve Morse [2] . Currently busy with The Winery Dogs .
Family
Lives in Rockland with his wife Marlene, daughter Melody ( English Melody Ruthandrea ), son Max ( English Max John ). He has a Mika dog and two cats: Mittens and Mini [3] .
Personal life
Likes to collect. He has put together a large collection of things related to the Dream Theater: bootlegs, posters, etc., takes his group on video and in the photo. He has a huge collection of films at home. .
