History

The settlement of Omarishar is absent in the sources of the first half of the XIX century. The name is formed in three parts: Omar - a princely noble name proper, and - "him" (priest place. 3rd person singular) and the ball - "section", "limit", "border". According to scientists, it appears from the second half of the 19th century and is referred to the name of the commander-in-chief of the Turkish army Omer Pasha , who landed in the city of Sukhum in 1855 with a force of forty thousand, and later occupied the entire Kodori Gorge before the confluence of the Guandra and Saken rivers, determining the north- eastern limit of his stay. Later, by order of the Sultan, he moved with the army to Megrelia [5] .
