Biography

Initially raised in Ustyug , where his father served in the forestry department as a foremaster , then he entered the Vologda Provincial Gymnasium , at the end of which, in 1811, as one of the best students, he was sent for further education to the St. Petersburg Pedagogical Institute .

At the end of the course in 1816, together with three other graduates of the institute, K.F.Svensk , A.G. Obodovsky and F.I. Busse , he was sent abroad to study various methods of primary education, in particular - the method of mutual learning . He visited England, Switzerland, Scotland, got acquainted with the methods and systems of education of Andrew Bell , , Pestalozzi and Fellenberg [1] . In 1818, on the way back to Russia, German educational institutions in Wiesbaden , Leipzig , Dresden , Halle and Berlin were visited.

Timaev almost did not have to apply the knowledge gained abroad. He was appointed a teacher at the newly established teacher's institute , and he took upon himself the choice of teaching history and, in addition, taught the pupils of the institute of recitation. At the same time, he was identified as a teacher of geography at the newly established Military Teaching Institute [2] .

When in 1823 the teacher institute was transformed into the 3rd St. Petersburg Gymnasium , Timaev was approved by her as a senior history teacher. In the same year, his teaching activities began at women's educational institutions, under the auspices of the Empress Maria Feodorovna: on August 11, 1823 he was identified as a translation teacher at the school of the Order of St. Catherine , and in 1824 he was appointed to serve in the classes of the Educational Society of Noble Maidens as a history teacher. In 1825, he was also appointed a teacher of Russian literature at the Mikhailovsky Artillery School . In connection with his appointment as an assistant class inspector in schools, Timaev stopped teaching history at the gymnasium in 1827, but in 1828 he was appointed adjunct of general and Russian history at the Main Pedagogical Institute , where he taught until August 1, 1832.

From 1833 to 1841, M. M. Timaev was called to teach Russian history and geography to the daughters of Nicholas I : Maria , Olga and Alexandra Nikolaevna, as well as Princess Hesse-Darmstadt, then the bride, and later the wife of Alexander II , Maria Alexandrovna .

In 1845, Timaev became a member of the training committee, established at the IV branch of His Majesty's own Chancellery for the consideration of teaching aids. On August 25, 1851 he was promoted to full state councilor.

Timaev owns the compilation of textbooks and manuals, mainly on history and literature, including: “Inscription of the course of fine literature” (St. Petersburg: type. A. Plyushara, 1832. - 228 p.); “Notebook of abbreviated Russian grammar” (St. Petersburg, 1839); “Histoire universelle, cours préparatoire à l'usage de la communauté Impériale des demoiselles” (2nd ed. - St. Petersburg, 1843); "Notebook of universal geography" (St. Petersburg, 1856) [3] and others.

He was buried at the Georgievsky (Bolsheokhtinsky) cemetery .
