Battle Path
It was created by order of the NPO of the USSR of November 15, 1942 from the Air Force units of the South-Western Front . At the time of December of that year, it included 447 combat aircraft. [3] .
The 17th Air Army began the battle route from the Battle of Stalingrad , where, together with other parts of the front, it conducted successful military operations against the enemy - in particular, it successfully carried out an air blockade of the surrounded group of German troops. In January 1943, she took part in the Ostrogozh-Rossoshansk offensive operation and in oncoming battles. In parallel with combat sorties, army units were used to organize the provision of ground troops with fuel and ammunition. In the spring, instead of the departed parts, the 9th mixed air corps was included. After that, the army included 715 aircraft. She participated in an air operation to destroy German aviation at airfields in May 1943 .
She took part in the Battle of Kursk , acting together with units of the Voronezh Front . In August, she participated in battles in the right-bank Ukraine , west of Kharkov . Supported ground troops in the Donbass operation . In the fall, she supported the liberation of southern Ukraine and played a significant role in disrupting the plan of the German command to destroy the Dnieper Dam. In the spring of 1944, units of the 17th Air Army took part in the battles for the liberation of Odessa [4] .
The next important point on the military route is the participation in the Yasso-Chisinau offensive operation (August 1944), during which the territories of Moldova and Romania were liberated from German troops. After that, the army participated in the liberation of Bulgaria , Yugoslavia , Hungary , Austria ( Vienna and Grazko-Amstetten operations). In addition to the liberation of these countries from the German invaders, the 17th Air Army made a significant contribution to the formation and formation of two aviation divisions of the Yugoslav Air Force, and in general to the development of relations between the USSR and Yugoslavia [5] .
At the end of the war, the army took part in the battles in Hungary and Austria , ending its journey in Czechoslovakia .
During the war years, the personnel made more than 200 thousand sorties, 229 people received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union , many soldiers and officers were awarded medals and orders [6] .
In 1992, after the collapse of the USSR, it was transferred to the Armed Forces of Ukraine .
