Biography

His full name is Abu Jakub. Tamim al-Hanzali al-Marwazi al-Naisaburi [2] .

Ishaq ibn Rahaveih came from Merv and was born presumably in 161 or 166 according to the Muslim calendar . His nickname “Ibn Rahaveih” was due to the fact that his father was born on the way to Mecca and the inhabitants of Merv dubbed him “Rahaveykh”, which means “born on the way” in their language. Ishaq ibn Rahaveih traveled to many cities to record and study Hadith . Many prominent scientists, who later became famous imams , were trained by Isaac. Among them are: the founder of the Hanbali law school Ahmad ibn Hanbal , the author of the most reliable collection of hadiths " Sahih al-Bukhari " Muhammad al-Bukhari , the author of " Sahi Muslim " Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj , Abu Isa at-Tirmidhi , an-Nasai and others [ 3] .

Ishaq ibn Rahaveiha is identified with Ibn Rahiweih al-Ardjani ( arab. انننرريا الأراني ), the author of the Commentary to the tenth book of [The Beginnings ] of Euclid ( arab .

Ishaq ibn Rahaveih died on the night of the 15th day of the month Sha'ban 238 AH [5] .

Quotes about him

Abu Hatim ar-Razi said about him: “I admire the authenticity and accuracy of his hadiths, as well as his amazing memory” [5] .

Abu Zura ar-Razi said: “No one knows more Hadith than Ishaq” [5] .

Ishaq ibn Rahaveih, like other hadith transmitters, was distinguished by excellent memory and memorizing ability. He said about himself: “I did not hear anything but remember it. And I did not forget anything from the memorized ” [6] .

Al-Hakim transmits from the words of Yahi ibn Muhammad al-Anbari that Ibrahim ibn Abu Talib said:

I asked Abu Qudam about Al-Shafii , Ahmad (ibn Hanbal), Ishaq (ibn Rahaveiha) and Abu Ubaidah and he answered: “The most understanding of them (in fiqh ) is Al-Shafii, but he was small in Hadith; as for the most God-fearing of them, it is Ahmad; that swaying the strongest in memorization, it is Ishaq; and as for the most knowledgeable of the Arabic language of them, this is Abu Ubaid ” [6] .

Original Text (ar.)

Bibliography

Despite the mass of disciples and hadiths that are transmitted from him, only his Musnad reached Ishaq ibn Rahaveiha. Abu Abdullah al-Hakim said: "Ishaq, Ibn al-Mubarak and Muhammad ibn Yahya buried their books." The same is reported from other imams , who did not leave books behind themselves due to fear of distortions that could be included in their books, and preferred oral transmission of the Sunnah and other knowledge [6] .
