History
The exact date of the laying of the monastery is not known exactly, however, according to legend, Old Khopovo was founded between 1496 and 1520 by the despot (in monasticism Maxim). However, the legend speaks about this rather vaguely, therefore, this question remains open today. The Turkish writings mention the monastery repeatedly (1545-1548, 1566-1569, 1578), and the internal ones even a little earlier.
The original wooden church with a tiled roof, dedicated to St. Nicholas, which, it is believed, was built by the despot George Brankovich, has not been preserved. It was completely destroyed during the earthquake of 1751.
Instead of the old wooden church, already in 1752 a stone one was built; a new stone one was dedicated, dedicated to St. Panteleimon . However, a new church, preserved to this day, was built
In the description of the Fruschogorsk monasteries of 1753, Old Khopovo is mentioned as a metoh (courtyard) of the New Khopovo monastery . At this time, the church was not painted, but simply painted white, there was no iconostasis either. The one-nave church with a dome was richly decorated with a carved iconostasis and painted from 1793 to 1800 by the Irish artist Efrem Isaylovich.
During the Second World War, the iconostasis was looted and dismantled, and the monastery cells were destroyed. Currently, the monastery is being reconstructed.
