Title History

The passage formed in the XVIII century as a road to the church of Sampson the Strangerer , so very soon the name Samsonyevskaya Street was assigned to this passage. This word was unusual for the Russian people, so it gave rise to many spelling variations. The official and correct name for the Big and Small Sampsonievsky Avenues was assigned in 1822 .

In the 19th century, Maly Sampsonievsky Avenue was also popularly called the avenue to the Sampsonius Stranopriemts church and the avenue to the Samsonievsky bridge , the latter name was common, since it was in the site of the Small Sampsonievsky Avenue that the Sampsonievsky floating bridge - the predecessor of the Grenadier Bridge .

In 1923, Maly Sampsonievsky Avenue was renamed Brotherhood Street , in memory of the Sampson Brotherhood , a voluntary cultural and educational society of workers, created in 1908 on the Vyborg side .

On October 4, 1991, Brotherhood Street was returned to its former name Small Sampsonievsky Avenue .

History

In 1908-1909, a monument to Peter the Great was unveiled on the corner of Maly and Bolshoy Sampsonievsky Avenues.

In 1930, tram tracks were laid along the avenue.

In 1937, the monument to Peter I was removed and in 1940 transferred to the Tretyakov Gallery [1] [2] .

In 1971-1975, after the Grenadier Bridge was transferred to its current place, tram tracks were removed from the avenue and laid along the new Grenadier Street .

In 2003, on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg, the monument to Peter I was restored in the avenue alignment. The exit from the avenue for cars was then closed at the monument; Today, through traffic on the avenue from the embankment to Bolshoi Sampsonievsky Avenue is impossible.
