The passage formed in the XVIII century as a road to the church of Sampson the Strangerer , so very soon the name Samsonyevskaya Street was assigned to this passage. In the 19th century, Maly Sampsonievsky Avenue was also popularly called the avenue to the Sampsonius Stranopriemts church and the avenue to the Samsonievsky bridge , the latter name was common, since it was in the site of the Small Sampsonievsky Avenue that the Sampsonievsky floating bridge - the predecessor of the Grenadier Bridge .
In 1923, Maly Sampsonievsky Avenue was renamed Brotherhood Street , in memory of the Sampson Brotherhood , a voluntary cultural and educational society of workers, created in 1908 on the Vyborg side .
On October 4, 1991, Brotherhood Street was returned to its former name Small Sampsonievsky Avenue .
