Physico-geographical characteristics
The mountain is of volcanic origin. The mountain range with steep slopes stretches from north to south. The mountain has three peaks: southern, northern and central. The highest peak is the central one, the height of the southern peak is 1830 meters. At the foot of the mountain on the west side is Lake Turkana [3] . Hiking to all three peaks takes a full day, from the northern peak to the central one can be reached in one hour [3] .
The reserve is located off the southern shores of Lake Turkana in the southern and eastern parts. Mount Kulal, whose height is 2285 meters, is the center of the reserve. The natural landscapes of the reserve are diverse and include the southern shore of the lake, the volcano and the desert between them. The reserve also includes a volcanic island on the lake and the salty desert of Chalbi, which is sometimes flooded with water [2] .
Flora and Fauna
The mountainous part of the reserve is characterized by moist forests and meadows, mainly dry evergreen forests grow in the foothills, with prevailing species of trees Olea africana , Juniperus procera and shrubs Euclea , Carissa . The semi-arid zone is characterized by Combretum , Commiphora , Euphorbia , Acacia repanolobium , Acacia mellifera and Duosperma eremophilum ; for the dry part of the reserve, Acacia reficiens and Acacia tortilis are characteristic [2] .
Only on the mountain is a rare subspecies of Zosterops poliogaster , which is sometimes considered as a separate species of Zosterops kulalensis [4] .
Human Interaction
North Horr village is located 50 km north of the mountains, South Horr - Loyangalani and South Khorr - Kargi roads are located more than 30 km south of the mountains, from which you can get to the Gatab mission located at the foot of the mountain [3] . Alpine forests on Mount Kulal are being intensively felled for firewood and building materials. At the edges of the forest, the grass burns out from arson, which leads to erosion [2] .
The following coordinates of the reserve are indicated in the database of the worldwide network of biosphere reserves : - The total area of the territory is 7000 km², the core is allocated - 11 km² [2] .
