Botanical DescriptionA plant with a trunk of about 9 meters tall and a diameter of 30β35 cm. The leaves are paired-pinnate, up to 5β7 meters long, with linear-lanceolate narrow pointed leaves, about 1 meter long and about 5 cm wide, with veins below bristly pubescent. The leaves are planted on strong grooved petioles on top of about 1 m long, with thorns. Inflorescences are apical, about 4 meters long, branched, sometimes with thorns. The plant dies after the first fruiting.
Meaning and ApplicationThe palm has significant commercial value as the main source of sago , which is obtained from the core of the trunk, washing with water the chopped wood of the core of the trunk. Starch obtained from palm wood is used for culinary purposes, for example, sago pancakes are one of the main foodstuffs of the local population.
Leaves can be used as straw for walls and ceilings, or for rafts.
