He studied at the Royal College of St. Peter, also known as the Westminster School ( en: Westminster School ), in Westminster Abbey , and later - at Oxford University . In 1823 he was appointed vicar in Cowley , Oxfordshire ( en: Cowley, Oxfordshire ), in 1827 he became the rector of the church in the village of West Titerley , Hampshire ( en: West Tytherley ), in 1829 he was elected director of the Harrow school . In 1836 he was ordained bishop and occupied the pulpit of Ripon and Leeds ( en: Bishop of Ripon and Leeds ), in 1856 he became bishop of Durham ( en: Bishop of Durham ), and in 1860 - the archbishop of York .
In 1862, Prime Minister Henry Palmerston appointed Charles Longley as Archbishop of Canterbury. Important events of his reign were the deposition of the South African bishop John Colenzo , which Longley refused to produce, and the first Lambeth Conference ( en: Lambeth Conferences ) of the bishops of the world Anglican community on September 24-27, 1867 (one of the reasons for which it was convened was precisely the Colenso problem ) The conference was attended by 78 bishops, both from the UK itself, and from the colonies, as well as from foreign countries. On the other hand, in 1868 the obligatory church tax was abolished ( en: Church rate ), in the same years the irreversible process of depriving the Irish part of the united church of England and Ireland of official state status began.
