Coat of Arms History
The first coat of arms of Mglin of the Starodub County was granted on March 27, 1626 by the Polish king Sigismund III : “In the azure field St. Florian with a willow branch in one hand and a bucket from which water pours out into the other.” [2] [3]
In the book of V. V. Rumyantseva “Emblems of lands and coats of arms of the cities of Left-Bank Ukraine of the period of feudalism” [4] it is erroneously stated that together with Magdeburg law Mglin was granted in 1626 a “coat of arms depicting a fortress wall with three towers with gates”. [3]
On June 4, 1782, Empress Catherine II, together with other emblems of the cities of Novgorod-Seversky Viceroyalty , approved the emblem of the city of Mglin (PSZRI, 1782, Law No. 15424). [5] [6]
The original description of the coat of arms of the county town Mglin read:
“In the green field, three golden towers connected, the middle one with the gate” .
In 1865, during the Köhne heraldic reform, a draft of the new coat of arms of Mglin (not officially approved) was developed: “In the green shield there is a fortress with 3 golden round and battlements and walls with black seams. In the free part - the coat of arms of the Chernihiv province . The shield is crowned with a silver tower crown of three prongs and is surrounded by golden ears of wheat connected by the Alexander’s ribbon . ”
In Soviet times, the historical coat of arms of Mglin (1762) was not used.
On December 8, 1983, the new coat of arms of Mglin, now acting , but did not pass the heraldic examination at the Heraldic Council under the President of the Russian Federation .
