Occupation

Born in Finland , studied at Abo, and already in 1754 published the botanical essay “Adumbratio florae”. In 1755 , he began to study medicine in Moscow , took part as a surgeon in the Schleswig war, and in 1768 received a doctorate in medicine (the first in Russia to take an exam without going abroad; [2] ). In 1770 , he was entrusted with the fight against the plague in Moldova and Wallachia , and in 1771 he was sent to Moscow for the same purpose.

In Moscow, he entered into strong wrangles with Athanasius Shafonsky , because for a long time he did not want to recognize the plague nature of the epidemic, but her further course soon confirmed the validity of Shafonsky's allegations. In 1776 , he abandoned medical practice and settled on his estate Lembolovo [3] [4] near St. Petersburg, devoted himself to agriculture and published many articles in the Proceedings of the Free Economic Society. His most important work is Descriptio pestis, quae anno 1770 in Jassia et 1771 in Moscua grassata est (Description of the plague that prevailed in Iasi in 1770 and in 1771 in Moscow) (St. Petersburg, 1784 ). It is curious that even then he spoke out for the close relationship of the plague to intermittent fever and various typhoid forms - a view that until recently had been shared by many doctors.
