Biography

Born in the town of Porozovo in the family of Rabbi Jacob-Joseph and Rivka. At the age of 13, he went to study at the yeshiva at Telshi , three years later he continued his studies at the yeshiva in Brisk , and a year later - at the yeshiva in Vilna . At age 18, received a diploma from a rabbi.

In 1905 he was appointed rabbi in the town of Sventsyan (before 1913), where he founded a yeshiva with about a hundred students.

From 1920 to 1936, he was the chief rabbi of Antwerp , where he established the Tahkemoni national religious school, the Talmud-torus and the yeshiva.

In 1933, he visited Eretz Yisrael and in 1936 he was elected Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv . He expanded the Tel Aviv yeshiva (now “Ishuv Hadash”), founded by his predecessor Shlomo Aronson, and introduced there, along with religious disciplines, the teaching of secular subjects in secondary school.

He actively participated in the movement “ Mizrahi ”, was engaged in organizational activities, published articles on the themes of Zionism and religion in the press organs of “Mizrahi”. He participated in the Zionist congresses (from 13 to 19) and in the world congresses of Mizrahi.
