Biography

In 1971 he graduated from the Physics Department of Krasnoyarsk State University with a degree in Biophysics.

In 1975 he defended his thesis for the degree of candidate of biological sciences on the topic "Microphotometric analysis of tree rings in the study of growth of woody plants" (specialty 03.00.02 - biophysics) [1]

Since 1971 he worked in the biophysics laboratory.

In 1981 he was transferred to the Institute of Biophysics of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR newly opened in Krasnoyarsk.

In 1984 he defended his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Biological Sciences on the topic "Analysis of the seasonal growth of organisms by layered structures" (specialty 03.00.02 - biophysics) [2] .

In 1988, he headed the dendroclimatology laboratory of the V.N.Sukachev Forest Institute of the SB RAS, in 1990 he was appointed deputy director of the institute, and in 1992 - director of the Siberian International Center for Environmental Research of Boreal Forests. Since 1994, he headed the Forest Institute named after V.N.Sukachev SB RAS . In 1997 he was elected a full member of the RAS.

From November 28, 2006 to October 26, 2017 - rector of the Siberian Federal University .

Since 2017 - Scientific Director of the Siberian Federal University .

Member of the editorial boards of three international scientific journals (Holocene, Tree-Ring Journal, Eurasian Journal of Forest Research) and two Russian ("Forestry", "Siberian Environmental Journal").

Member of the Public Council under the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation.

Member of the Supreme Council of the United Russia Party [3] .

Scientific activity

  • The head (from the Russian side) of the largest international project implemented jointly with the Society named after Max Planck (Germany) to assess the impact of climate change on the exchange of greenhouse gases in forest ecosystems of Siberia (a unique observatory was built in the Krasnoyarsk Territory in the taiga zone with a high-rise mast of more than 300 m).
  • Creator of a leading scientific school in the field of ecology of woody plants and dendrochronology.
  • Developer of the system of dendroclimatological monitoring of Russian forests, awarded the Prize of the RAS named after ac. V.N.Sukachev, as well as the prize of the Alexander Humboldt Foundation (Germany).
  • He prepared four doctors and 27 candidates of sciences.
  • Author of over two hundred scientific publications, including eight books, three of which were published abroad.

Scientific, pedagogical and social activities

  • In 1971-1981 - work at the Institute of Physics. L.V. Kirensky SB RAS.
  • In 1981-1988 - Senior Researcher, Head. Laboratory of the Institute of Biophysics SB RAS.
  • In 1988, he headed the Laboratory of Dendroclimatology of the Forest Institute named after V.N. Sukacheva SB RAS, in 1990 was appointed deputy director of the institute, in 1992 - director of the Siberian International Center for Ecological Research of Boreal Forests.
  • Since 1994, he headed the Forest Institute. V.N.Sukacheva SB RAS.
  • In 1997 he was elected an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
  • On November 28, 2006, he was appointed rector of the Siberian Federal University.
  • On June 17, 2018, he was appointed a freelance adviser to the Governor of the Krasnoyarsk Territory to resolve issues related to science and education [4] .

Awards and Prizes

  • Order of Friendship (January 25, 2017) - for a great contribution to the development of science, education, training of qualified specialists [5] .

  • The Silver Sigma badge of honor for many years of creative work, a great contribution to the development of science and in connection with the 50th anniversary of the SB RAS.
