Academic and political activities
Come from a wealthy family, which received an aristocratic title in 1724.
His first work, for which he collected materials in Rome , being there at the Netherlands embassy, is the “Spirit of the Church” ( l'Esprit de l'Eglise , 1821), in the spirit of the philosophy of the 18th century [1] .
De Potter began his political career in 1828 in protest against the oppression of Catholics by the Dutch government. Sentenced to 18 months in prison and fined for attacks on the government, he used the time of imprisonment to strengthen the union between the Belgian Catholics and liberals [1] .
New anti-government pamphlets, which brought him great popularity, led to his expulsion from the Netherlands. When the Belgian revolution broke out, de Potter returned to Brussels and became a member of the provisional government. He wished, in addition to the fall of the Nassau House , the establishment of a republican form of government, the reduction of government posts by half, the election of officials by universal suffrage. Seeing that his ideas did not enjoy sympathy, de Potter quit social activities. [one]
In 1831, he tried to establish an alliance to protect Belgium from the intrigues of foreign offices; but the police initiated a popular demonstration against him, and he was forced to leave for Paris, from where he strongly attacked the policies of King Leopold , mainly for giving Limburg back to Holland. In 1838 he returned to Belgium. [one]
