History

Mission Viejo delivered fresh horses to the United States military during the Mexican-American War .

Hilly terrain in the area of the current city was used for grazing cattle and sheep. Due to the complexity of urbanization, the construction of the city has long been considered impossible. In 1960, the lands on which the modern Mission Viejo is located were declared unsuitable for development [3] , but by 1980, urban planner Donald Bren completed the creation of a master plan for the city, which he believed could be built on this territory. The first houses here were built a little earlier, in the late 1970s.

Most of the city is occupied by residential buildings, although there are a number of office buildings and a small number of enterprises within it. Mission Viejo is known for its picturesque trees in the surrounding area. In 2007, according to the FBI, the city was the safest in the United States. In 2009, it was recognized as the safest city in California and the third most secure city in the country.

According to the press, it is the best city for living in the state and among the best cities for living throughout the country. Residents of the city are virtually unaffected by crime. The city had 78 violent crimes for every 100,000 inhabitants in 2016, which is much less than 386 cases per 100,000 inhabitants throughout the country [4] .
