Biography
Vasily Duenko was born in 1921 on the Samokhino farm (now a village in the Oktyabrsky district of the Volgograd region ). After graduating from high school he worked as a teacher. In 1941, Duenko was called up to serve in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. In 1942 he graduated from the Makhachkala military infantry school. Since April of the same year - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. By August 1944, Senior Lieutenant Vasily Duenko commanded a company of the 645th Infantry Regiment of the 202nd Infantry Division of the 27th Army of the 2nd Ukrainian Front . Distinguished during the liberation of Romania [1] .
On August 20, 1944, during a battle on the outskirts of the settlement of Erbinechi north-west of Yass, Duenko personally destroyed the enemy’s machine-gun crew, then raised his fighters with a bayonet attack. On August 21, the company seized a height near Erbinechi and beat off five German counterattacks. During the last of them, Duenko was seriously wounded and captured, where he was brutally murdered - doused with gasoline and burned. He was buried not far from Erbinechi [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945, Senior Lieutenant Vasily Duenko was posthumously awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also awarded the Order of Lenin and the Red Banner , a medal [1] .
