Republic Square ( czech Náměstí Republiky ) is a square in Prague , the capital of the Czech Republic , on the eastern tip of the Old Town .
Until 1916, the square was called Joseph, then renamed Franz Josef II Square, and received its present name in 1918 in honor of the proclamation of the Czechoslovak Republic .
In the past, both trolleybus and tram lines passed through the square. In 1984, the tram tracks were removed from here, and subsequently a traffic flow was gradually transferred here from the neighboring Na Pshykop Street. In the same year, the whole square was closed for the purpose of construction, the building of the Kotva trading house was erected there, and the metro station of the same name was built, which replaced the abolished tramway line.
At the beginning of the XXI century, the square was again closed to archaeological excavations; Upon completion, the Palladium trading house was erected here, and the square was reopened for transport.
