Biography

He was born in the family of the artist Alexei Platonovich Murzanov (1833-1898) and his wife Varvara Vasilyevna (nee Moguleva, circa 1833-1916).

In 1878 he graduated from the Vladimir City College in St. Petersburg. From 1878 to 1880 he served as a clerk in the office of the St. Petersburg metropolitan magistrate of the 13th district. Since 1880 - employee of the Senate Archive.

Lack of higher education and non-noble origin were the reasons for Murzanov's long tenure in the lower position of clerical minister. Only in 1890 he received the first class rank - a college registrar. Murzanov served as archivist, head of the department. In 1899 he (already in the rank of titular adviser) was appointed secretary of the Senate Archive. During the frequent business trips of the inspector (chief) of the archive, Murzanov performed his duties. In 1900 he received the rank of college assessor .

In 1909, Murzanov was already a state councilor, and on November 20, 1914 he was granted the rank of acting state councilor (becoming a rank above his superior I. A. Blinov ). The rank of a real state adviser gave the right to hereditary nobility (confirmed by the Department of Heraldry in February 1917).

High appreciation of Murzanov’s activity was explained by his active participation in the work on disclosing the funds of the Senate Archive.

He took part in the preparation of publications:

  • Senate Archive. - SPb., 1888-1913. - T. 1-15. (A collection of documents that included texts of decrees that were not included in the “ Complete Collection of Laws of the Russian Empire ”.)
  • Ministry of Justice for a hundred years, 1802-1902: historical outline. - SPb., 1902.
  • A list of documents and files stored in the Senate archive. - SPb.,; Pg., 11909-1917.
  • Materials for the index to the journals and definitions of the 1st Department of the Governing Senate, stored in the Senate Archive, 1797 - 1825 - St. Petersburg; Pg., 1910-1915. (The publication is not completed, brought only to the letter B.)
  • Judicial statutes on November 20, 1864 for fifty years. - PG., 1914.

Murzanov prepared a list of senators for the publication History of the Governing Senate for Two Hundred Years (St. Petersburg, 1911). Work on this list, supplementing it with more detailed biographical information, he continued in subsequent years. The Dictionary of Russian Senators was published based on materials stored in the Manuscripts Department of the Russian National Library in 2011 by D. N. Shilov .

In 1917, Murzanov supervised the preparation of the evacuation of the Senate Archive from Petrograd, but it never took place. After the October Revolution, the archival service was reorganized. Murzanov remained the secretary of the archive (now this post was elected), continued to work on the description of documents. In 1925, the Leningrad Historical Archive was created on the basis of the Senate Archive - the predecessor of the current Russian State Historical Archive . In February 1927, Murzanov was dismissed from the staff reduction archive. At the request of LSU (signed by historian A.E. Presnyakov ), he was assigned a personal pension.

N. A. Murzanov died after a serious illness on February 28, 1935. He was buried in the Smolensk Orthodox cemetery .
