Having studied two courses, he voluntarily joined the army, and was sent to the Saratov armored school by the Sarapul military commissariat. In 1938 he joined the CPSU . After graduating from college in the fall of 1939, he served in the Leningrad Military District [1] .

He took part in the Soviet-Finnish war as part of the 37th separate reconnaissance battalion of the 35th tank brigade of the 7th army on the North-Western Front , and commanded a tank platoon [2] . During this war, the tank crew under the command of Kiryanov repeatedly distinguished himself.

In one of the advanced battles, the tank of Pavel Kiryanov received eight direct hits from anti-tank rifles, a flamethrower, front and rear machine guns were broken, the commander was wounded, but did not leave control [3] .

During the raid on the enemy rear, the tank engine stalled. The Finns surrounded the car and with the help of three tractor tractors tried to take it away. Suddenly, the driver managed to start the engine, the shooter opened fire, and the tank at full speed pulled the tractor tractors out of the front line, into Soviet captivity [3] .

Once the Kiryanov tank was stuck in a funnel from a shell covered with snow. The commander took the battle with the Finns surrounding the car, the tankmen fired back for several hours, risking freezing, but they did not leave the car. After the approach of their units, each crew member with severe frostbite was sent to the sanbat [3] .

Only in the period from February 6 to 24, 1940, the Kiryanov tank from flamethrowers and machine guns destroyed several long-term fire installations, a large number of enemy soldiers and officers [2] .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 21, 1940 with the wording “for exemplary performance of the command missions on the front against the Finnish White Guard and courage and heroism shown at the same time”, Lieutenant Kiryanov Pavel Nikolayevich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Medal Star ”(No. 426).

After the "winter war", Lieutenant Kiryanov studied at the Military Academy of Motorization and Mechanization of the Red Army. After the start of World War II, Pavel Kiryanov was again at the front. He fought in the Petrozavodsk direction. He became deputy commander of a tank battalion. July 24, 1941 in the area of Garbolovaya Gora in Karelia was missing [2] .
