Machara ( Abh. Machara , Georgian. მაჭარა ) is a village in the Gulrypshsky district ( Gulripsha municipality ) of Abkhazia , on the shore of the Sukhum Bay of the Black Sea, at the confluence of the River Machara , north-west of the district center of Gulrypsha .

In 1959, 1,257 people lived in the village of Machara, mostly Georgians and Russians (the Machar village council as a whole had 4,209 people, mostly Armenians , Georgians and Russians ) [5] [6] . In 1989, 1152 people lived in the village [4] [7] . According to the 2011 census, the population of the rural settlement (village administration) of Machar was 2,640 inhabitants, of which 66.8% were Armenians (1,763 people), 23.7% were Abkhaz (626 people), 6.5% were Russians (171 people), 1.0% - Georgians (27 people), 0.8% - Greek (21 people), 0.3% - Ukrainians (7 people), 0.9% - others (25 people) [8] .
