The administrative center is the city of Alatyr (not part of the district).
Geography
The area is located in the southwestern part of the Chuvash Republic . The western and southern borders border the Mordovian Republic ( Ardatovsky district ) and the Ulyanovsk region ( Sursky district ), the northern border - with Poretsky and Ibresinsky , the eastern - with Batyrevsky and Shemurshinsky districts.
History
Alatyr district was formed on September 5, 1927 . His predecessor was Alatyr County . In accordance with the Law of the Chuvash Republic of November 24, 2004 No. 37 “On Establishing the Borders of Municipalities of the Chuvash Republic and Giving them the Status of Urban, Rural Settlement, Municipal District and Urban District”, it is endowed with the status of a municipal district .

- National composition
According to the 2010 census, the ethnic composition of the Alatyr region is represented by Russian and Mordovian and Chuvash ethnic groups. Mordva is an indigenous people of Alatyr and neighboring Poretsky district . At the time of the census, the settlements with the predominant number of Mordovians are: Altyshevo (village) , Atrat (village) , Kuchenyaevo , Nizovka , New Altyshevo , Baevka , Novikovka . A few more Mordovians live in significant numbers together with the Russians - Atrat (village) , Altyshevo (village) , Borki and Anyutino . The titular population of the republic - the Chuvashs , live in the east of the region: the villages of Soigino , Stary Aybesi , Novye Aybesi , the villages of Pervomaisky , Chapaevka , Polukir and Salniy .

Nature
The relief territory is a hilly plain, dissected by valleys of small rivers.
Minerals are represented by raw materials for brick production (Alatyrskoye and Atratskoye deposits); building sands for the production of limestone-sand blocks (Chuvarleyskoye deposit); Tripoli , used for the production of perforated bricks (Alatyrskoye deposit); raw materials for expanded clay gravel (Stemaskoye deposit); glass sands (Bayevskoye deposit) and others. There are peat deposits.
The climate of the region is temperate continental. In July, the average temperature is 19–20 ° C, in January the average temperature is about −12 ° C. The area receives a sufficient amount of precipitation - from 400 to 500 mm per year.
The main rivers are the Sura (the length of the district is over 50 km), the Abyss (over 30 km), Lyulya (28 km), Alatyr (24 km) and others. The floodplains of the rivers are crossed by the valleys of the rivers flowing into it, elders, and in some places swampy. Forest and lakes are the habitat of protected birds - capercaillie , black grouse , waterfowl.
The soils are diverse - from sod-podzolic to gray forest and chernozems, in the floodplains of rivers sod-floodplain-alluvial and marsh.
The region is characterized by severe afforestation. In the forest stand, pine , spruce , linden , ash , maple , oak . Forests are a favorable place to create recreational areas. Widely used in this regard Chuvarleysky forest. In the Sura valley, there is the Prisursky reserve .
Economics
The area is characterized by forestry. Up to 80% of all industrial production is concentrated in Alatyr . .
Agricultural land covers over 24% of the total area.
Transport
A railway line Kazan - Kanash - Ruzayevka of the Alatyr - Ibresi - Kanash and Alatyr - Poretskoye - Shumerlya railroad was laid across the district.
